  • EXPLORE FURTHER: A New Hampshire town regains its title as the most heated real estate market.

Natalie and Jordan Holland aimed to construct a house for their four children without accumulating debt.

Thus, the couple from South Carolina purchased a $68,000 shed and transformed it into their ideal residence.

Living in Houston, Texas , they yearned for more space where their sons could run around outdoors.

The pair bought a 16x48-foot shed along with a piece of land in South Carolina.

"We discovered that you can reside in a more compact, yet aesthetically pleasing home filled with items you adore, all without accumulating debt," says Natalie, who works as a wedding hair stylist and food photographer. told Realtor.com.

In order to cut costs, they relocated to the shed and proceeded with the building process. A primary factor behind selecting the shed as their base was its mobility.

We chose the shed because it’s portable," Natalie explained to Realtor.com. "You can move it as long as you keep the width under 16 feet.

The shed was equipped with four walls, integrated windows and doors, a robust roof, and floor. It also featured two lofts located above the kitchen and living area.

The Hollands took care of the internal arrangement on their own, setting up walls, plumbing, and electrical systems—even though they had no previous experience in building or designing. Driven to cut costs, they performed most of the labor themselves.

The Hollands needed to determine the placement of the internal partitions and incorporate the necessary piping and electrical systems.

Their initial alteration involved eliminating the loft situated above the kitchen area, which allowed them to raise the ceiling to reach its highest possible point at 11.5 feet.

'As a result, the space feels considerably more spacious and lighter,' Natalie commented.

They constructed a stairway up to the raised area where their two older sons rest.

Initially, they opted to remove the loft above the kitchen by increasing the shed’s ceiling to its highest point of 11.5 feet.

"They sit on the floor and play with Legos, and because I’m not often upstairs, they can keep their Lego sets out," she explained about the boys' room.

The two younger boys sleep in the same room as their parents, where they fit a crib, a king-sized bed, a dresser, and have a closet available.

The bathroom, situated beside the bedroom, features a combination of toilet, shower, and bathtub along with a dual sink vanity.

However, it is the kitchen where Natalie takes pride in considering her biggest accomplishment.

"We really appreciate the ample space here. Many similar-sized houses tend to overlook the importance of the kitchen," she mentioned.

However, we understood that the heart of the house lies in the kitchen, which is why we decided to focus on it first.

The living room includes integrated cabinets, a crystal chandelier, and an extensive dining table.

"Having a home you adore is the quintessential American dream," Natalie stated about the initiative.

It could potentially be easier and less costly than most people believe.
