KAMPALA - James Churchill Ssentamu, who has been named as the 91st Guild President of Makerere University, took office formally on Friday, March 21, 2025. He was inaugurated along with his cabinet and representatives from the Guild Representative Council.
The event at the university's Main Hall saw attendance from professors, pupils, and the relatives of the new administrators.
Ssentamu, a sophomore studying for a bachelor's degree in Social Sciences, emerged victorious in the fiercely contested election as an independent candidate.
Sentamu from the National Unity Platform (NUP) emerged victorious in a three-way contest, barely edging out NRM nominee John Bosco Rukundo, who came in second. Meanwhile, Basalirwa finished in third position.
Ssentamu, the son of Fred Nyanzi who leads the mobilization efforts for NUP, committed to enhancing both the educational and political climate at Makerere University.
Looking back at the event, he amusingly remembered that several of his fellow members thought he would be more fitting as a timekeeper rather than taking on the role of guild president.
He stated his dedication to making sure the university’s presence remains prominent worldwide while keeping Makerere’s esteemed global reputation intact.
The departing Guild President, Vincent Lubega, discussed the significant insights gained throughout his term. He stressed the significance of acknowledging various viewpoints and underscored that resolutions can be achieved via conversation, promoting a harmonious atmosphere at Makerere University.
Lubega motivated the students to seek solace in God during tough times and advised them to confront challenges with strength, particularly since numerous students experience various personal struggles.
Dr. Winifred Namuwonge Kabumbuli, who serves as the dean of students at Makerere, greeted the incoming leadership and thanked the previous team for their efforts.
Professor Buyinza Mukadasi, who serves as the acting deputy vice-chancellor for academic affairs at Makerere, extended his congratulations to both the departing and new guild leaders.

He commended the Electoral Commission for their thorough efforts during the entire electoral period. During his speech, Professor Mukadasi advised the newly elected guild leaders to acquaint themselves with the institution’s rules and guidelines, emphasizing the significance of enhancing student understanding to maintain campus peace.
“Nothing will bring you more happiness than contributing harmoniously,” Professor Mukadasi stated. “Operate based on the values of conversation, camaraderie, and collaboration, and you’ll achieve success. We are dedicated to supporting you, yet keep in mind that as students, your primary focus should remain on your education.”
He underscored the moral duty carried by the guild leaders as stewards of public assets, emphasizing that these positions are entrusted for the welfare of the broader community.
The ceremony came to an end with the formal installation of the new guild leaders, signaling the start of their tenure at the head of what is considered one of Uganda’s foremost institutions of higher learning.
