Canyon de Chelly stands as a remarkable natural wonder, featuring a stunning scenery adorned with historical Navajo locations, all nestled between crimson sandstone walls and lush woodlands.
Nestled within the Navajo Tribal Lands, the awe-inspiring Canyon de Chelly National Monument spans more than 80,000 acres in northwestern Arizona. To reach this stunning location, take South Rim Drive—a picturesque route that winds through a 15-mile portion of the southern part of the national park. Along your journey, you'll encounter seven vantage points offering breathtaking panoramas. From certain spots, you can gaze down nearly a thousand feet to see the canyon’s base below!
Stop by Spider Rock Overlook, offering vistas of the iconic 750-foot-tall pinnacles deeply rooted in Native American mythology. According to tribal lore, these spires house theSpider Woman, believed to have instructed the Navajo people in weaving and has watched over their holy lands for more than three centuries. For those wishing to explore the canyon’s interior with its crimson sandstone walls—formed and sculpted by flowing water over 50 million years—a local indigenous guide must be hired upon entry.
From Face Rock Overlook, yet another breathtaking vantage point, disembark from your car to fully appreciate the dramatic rock structures and sinuous contours of the gorge below, where distant hikers resemble tiny insects against such grandeur. Informational kiosks provide helpful insights into landmarks hidden among the cliff faces. In the far-off view stands Black Rock, once part of an extinct volcano reshaped through erosion and presently covered in vegetation.
