In the 2025 Henley Passport Index, Nigeria ranks 91st, tying with Ethiopia and Myanmar for position.
Each nation is grappling with assaults carried out by militant organizations.
The Henley Passport Index gets an update each month based on information provided by the International Air Transport Authority.
In Africa, Nigeria’s passport had a higher ranking compared to just a handful of nations: the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea, Libya, and Somalia.
This indicates that Nigeria now holds the seventh weakest passport in Africa. It ranked as the sixth weakest in 2024.
The rankings were released following statements from Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, who mentioned that the government had enhanced the nation's international reputation.
Tuggar made this statement on Thursday at a press briefing in Abuja.
"The following phase involves elevating and celebrating Nigeria's reputation," he stated, mentioning that the ministry assisted in securing the freedom of Nigerians who were unjustly imprisoned in various nations.
He didn't elaborate on how the government planned to reach this objective, but he mentioned that Nigeria is collaborating with other countries and adhering to ethical standards in its international relations.
In July 2023, Nigeria’s passport was placed at 90th position worldwide; however, it subsequently fell to 97th place, ranking lower than several African nations including Burundi, Cameroon, and Liberia.
This indicated a significant shift in Nigeria's visa regulations.
Nevertheless, the passport advanced in 2024, climbing to the 92nd position.
In the meantime, Seychelles maintained its standing as the most powerful African passport, placing 22nd globally.
It climbed two positions from the prior year and currently permits travel to 156 nations.
Singapore kept its position as the globe's strongest passport, granting entry to 193 nations.
Afghanistan remained at the lowest position, having access to just 25 countries.
