The Imo State branch of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has characterized the Supreme Court's ruling on the recent national secretary election within the party as both legitimate and robust.
On Friday, Lancelot Obiaku, who serves as the State Publicity Secretary for PDP Imo State, released a statement asserting that the ruling has halted an unparalleled violation of the party’s constitution. This action was preventing what would have been a breach of the aspirations held by the party’s founders.
He remembered that the Supreme Court, in a collective decision from a bench of five judges on Friday, March 21, 2025, ruled that Senator Samuel Anyanwu was indeed the legitimate National Secretary of the party, overturning the main ruling of the Appeals Court in Enugu that had confirmed on December 20, 2024, an earlier High Court decision removing him from his position as National Secretary of the PDP.
The Supreme Court determined that the matter concerning who holds the position of National Secretary of the PDP falls under the purview of internal political party matters, which are deemed non-justiciable issues.
He stated that when Justice Jamilu Tukur delivered the main verdict, he mentioned that the plaintiff, Aniagu Emmanuel, who filed the case in the lower court, didn’t have sufficient legal standing because he failed to demonstrate how his interests were impacted by the individual serving as the National Secretary of the PDP.
The party claims that according to the judge, Senator Anyanwu has not resigned and should remain in office since he was elected through a National Convention, aligning with the party’s constitution of 2017, as revised.

This clause does not apply since he did not take an oath as Governor—a position outside the party—after losing the gubernatorial election held in November 2023.
He asserted that according to the party’s constitution, there isn’t any clause requiring a party official to step down prior to running for a non-partisan elected position.
The gathering commends Senator Samuel Anyanwu for his bravery in steadfastly supporting justice and adhering to legal principles despite facing unhealthy conspiracies and unconstitutional maneuvers targeted at him.
Consequently, the party urged its leaders and stakeholders at both state and national levels to unite and promote peace for the organization’s stability and progress.
