Addis Ababa, March 21, 2025 (ENA) — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, praised the significant contribution made by the Luanda Process, which was led by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço under the auspices of the African Union chairmanship.
The Chairperson additionally commended President Lourenço for his consistent involvement and dedication to fostering dialogue, reducing tensions, and building trust among the involved parties.
As the Champion of the African Union for Peace and Reconciliation, his guidance embodies outstanding political acumen and demonstrates the Union’s dedication to finding homegrown solutions to challenges faced by Africa, according to Youssouf in an official statement.
The Luanda Process has played a crucial role in establishing an environment conducive to dialogue and facilitating both regional and international involvement. It provides a significant framework for promoting mutual comprehension as part of efforts towards achieving peace, security, and stability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Recently, Angola has taken on the role of mediator in the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, which intensified at the end of January when the M23 rebel group captured the strategically important city of Goma in eastern Congo. By February, M23 had also gained control over Bukavu, the second-largest urban center in eastern Congo.
The Chairperson similarly applauds the leadership demonstrated by the heads of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda for their dedication to dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution. This underscores a mutual understanding that enduring peace and stability are crucial for the economic growth of both nations and the broader Great Lakes area.
The African Union emphasizes the significance of sustained collaboration among the AU, regional economic communities, and international partners to solidify advancements and aid current initiatives aimed at achieving a peaceful solution to the crisis.
The Chairperson emphasizes the priority of African-driven approaches while highlighting the African Union’s steadfast dedication to backing every initiative intended for attaining lasting peace and stability in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Consistent with its mission to foster peace, security, and cohesion throughout Africa, the African Union is prepared to support and streamline comprehensive and collaborative efforts. Therefore, every initiative must align with and bolster current African-driven programs, guaranteeing consistency, local control, and efficiency in tackling ongoing issues.
