Glo Honors Late NBA Legend in International Tribute (English Edition)

Globacom, the Nigerian telecommunications company, has announced intentions to honor the renowned Congolese-American basketball star and humanitarian, Dikembe Mutombo, during an episode of CNN International’s magazine show. African Voices Playmakers.

The programme, sponsored by the data solutions provider, will highlight Mutombo’s remarkable career in the NBA and his lasting impact as a mentor and philanthropist.

This information was revealed in a statement acquired by Saturday PUNCH .

The 30-minute episode is set to debut on Saturday (today) at 7:30 a.m., followed by a rerun later that same day at 11 a.m.

Although broadcasts are planned for both Sunday and Monday, viewers will also be able to catch rebroadcasts over the subsequent weekend. This ensures that fans and budding athletes throughout Africa can experience the lasting impact of Mutombo’s life and legacy.

The statement says, "Dikembe Mutombo Mpolondo Mukaba Jean-Jacques Wamutombo, known as 'Mount Mutombo' due to his defensive prowess, was born on June 25, 1966. Although he pursued medicine at Georgetown University in the United States, Dikembe ultimately chose to become a professional basketball player, enjoying an impressive 18-year career in the NBA."

Prior to passing away due to brain cancer in September 2024, Dikembe established the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation with the aim of enhancing the quality of life for people in his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He established an enduring legacy as both a legendary figure and a guiding force for a fresh cohort of African basketball players, which includes his son Ryan, his two nephews, along with several young talents from the continent—two standout individuals being ascending NBA stars Yves Missi and Josh Okogie.

The pair consisting of 20-year-old Missi, a professional basketball player from Cameroon playing for the New Orleans Pelicans, and 26-year-old Nigerian-American shooting guard Okojie, who represents the Charlotte Hornets in the USA, will join the 30-minute program. They will discuss how Dikembe Mutombo's impact continues to mold the sport's future and inspire young athletes throughout Africa.

The show premieres every Saturday at 7:30 a.m., followed by another airing later that same day at 11 a.m. On Sundays, additional broadcasts occur at 3:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., and then again on Mondays at 3:00 a.m. The following Saturday, further replays air at 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.; subsequently, they continue to replay on Sunday at 4:30 a.m. and 7 p.m., as well as on the subsequent Monday at 4 a.m.
