Measles Outbreak in Netherlands Surges, Tied Back to Morocco

The Dutch public health agencies have documented 108 instances of measles, with recent occurrences noted at four primary schools situated throughout different parts of Amsterdam.

The Dutch National Institute for Public Health reports that at least 17 individuals have been diagnosed with measles this year following exposure to the virus during visits to Morocco.

Three individuals in the Netherlands tested positive for measles following their return from Romania, a country experiencing an ongoing outbreak of the disease.

Morocco has seen tens of thousands of measles cases, resulting in more than 100 fatalities linked to the virus.

In France, the outbreak of measles has also been associated with cases originating from Morocco, where over 6,300 confirmed cases and 120 fatalities have occurred within the nation, as reported by the Moroccan Ministry of Health.

Reports from France show a notable rise in case numbers after the latest school break, with 13 instances recorded from Morocco in 2025, which contrasts sharply with only 26 cases throughout the entire year of 2024.
