At the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU-PSC) held in Addis-Abeba on Friday, Morocco called for acknowledgment of how new threats to peace and security affect women and girls.
In a PSC meeting about the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) initiative, representatives from Morocco encouraged the Council to acknowledge how new threats such as climate change and pandemics affect women and girls in terms of peace and security.
The group additionally emphasized the importance of including these consequences within the plans for executing the WPS agenda throughout Africa.
During this PSC meeting, led by Morocco in March, the delegation highlighted that the council might want to stress the importance of defining explicit metrics and strong oversight systems to ensure regular updates on the advancements tied to the WPS agenda commitments.
The delegation stated that Morocco has implemented specific measures to back the Agenda, such as launching the country’s first National Action Plan in 2022, in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325.
The National Strategy centers on preventive diplomacy, mediation, and peacekeeping efforts. It also aims to foster a culture of peace and equality as well as enhance the economic empowerment of women.
This is consistent with King Mohammed VI’s aim to advance gender equality as a cornerstone for a contemporary and democratic society, stated the delegation.
In line with this program, the delegation highlighted their continuous work on women’s training, focusing specifically on preventing extremism. They also stressed the importance of enhancing women’s economic power as an additional strategy against violence.
This effort seeks to merge the Women, Peace, and Security agenda with climate issues, consistent with the 2019 AU Commission Chairperson’s report. It acknowledges how new security risks such as climate change affect women and girls specifically.
