On Thursday, tech mogul and Donald Trump supporter Elon Musk backed a financial incentive for Wisconsin voters who endorse a petition targeting "activist judges." This move came just ahead of an important election for the state’s Supreme Court.
This action follows Trump’s demand for courts nationwide to cease obstructing his policy initiatives. Recently, judges have postponed attempts by his administration to transform the federal government via what Musk calls the Department of Government Efficiency.
America PAC, a pro-Trump political action committee established and largely funded by Musk, said it would give $100 to Wisconsin voters who sign the “petition in opposition to activist judges.”
The petition, which Musk shared again on his social media platform X, calls for residents of Wisconsin to sign by April 1, as the state holds elections for their Supreme Court judgeship at that time.
America PAC has lent its support to conservative candidate Brad Schimel for the important position in Wisconsin’s highest court.
Judges ought to interpret statutes based on what they say rather than altering them according to their own personal or political objectives," it stated on X. "Registered Wisconsin voters get $100 for signing the petition and an additional $100 for every person they recruit.
In the 2024 presidential contest, America PAC initiated a daily lottery offering a $1 million prize to randomly selected individuals who had signed petitions in key electoral swing states.
In October, during President Joe Biden’s administration, the Justice Department cautioned Musk and America PAC about potential violations of federal law. This legislation forbids compensating individuals for registering to vote as part of the sweepstakes.
Following a harsh critique from Trump on Tuesday regarding a judge who indicated that his administration had failed to comply with an order preventing the expulsion of alleged undocumented immigrants to El Salvador, the Wisconsin petition was submitted.
Trump personally demanded the impeachment of District Judge James Boasberg, referring to him as "a troublemaker and instigator" in comments that resulted in an unusual public censure of a sitting president from the Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
In the Wisconsin election, Republican-supported Schimel is going up against Susan Crawford, who has Democratic backing.
According to a statement from Crawford's campaign, Elon Musk is attempting to acquire a position on the Wisconsin Supreme Court with the aim of obtaining a beneficial verdict for his company in an ongoing lawsuit against the state.
Musk's electric vehicle firm, Tesla, is contesting Wisconsin's decision not to exempt it from a regulation that stops manufacturers from operating their own dealerships. This dispute might ultimately be heard by the state Supreme Court.
"Brad Schimel has dedicated his career to representing the interests of affluent special groups and campaign contributors, whereas Musk seeks a judge who will rule in his favor to benefit his personal financial goals," stated Derrick Honeyman, spokesperson for Crawford’s campaign.
