Subhash Ghai, Simi Garewal, Tina Ambani, and Neetu Kapoor Toast 45 Years of 'Karz'

Mumbai (Maharashtra), India, March 21 (ANI): Get ready for a trip down memory lane as Subhash Ghai's film 'Karz' was screened at the Red Lorry Film Festival in Mumbai on Friday.

The event marked the reunion of director Subhash Ghai with the lead actresses from his film "Karz," Simi Garewal and Tina Ambani. Veteran actress Neetu Kapoor, who is also the late Rishi Kapoor’s spouse, was present at the screening and had the opportunity to meet up with the 'Karz' crew.

In this film directed by Subhash Ghai, Rishi Kapoor portrayed a character tormented by previous lifetimes. The movie 'Karz,' which uniquely combines themes of reincarnation and suspense, showcased Kapoor’s range as an actor.

His powerful acting, paired with an iconic musical score particularly the song 'Meri Umar Ke Naujawano (Om Shanti Om)', contributed to making 'Karz' a memorable highlight of his cinematic journey.

During a previous discussion with ANI, Ghai recounted the challenges he encountered in convincing Simi Garewal to take on the part of Kaamini in 'Karz.'

He informed ANI, “The biggest challenge was convincing Simi to take up the part since she declined initially. She mentioned, ‘Subhash, although the storyline is appealing, I can’t accept this particular role because they will portray me as a villainess.’ So, I ended up dining at her house for five consecutive evenings. It required public relations efforts from my side just to persuade her; here’s how it transpired. I advised her to reconsider since the character offered was excellent. However, she insisted that she preferred another role instead. Interestingly enough, despite having limited commitments then, she remained steadfast in her decision.”

He additionally mentioned that he told Simi Grewal he would ensure her dignity was preserved in the movie.

"He explained that he would uphold her dignity, assuring her there was no reason for concern. He mentioned that he viewed this character differently and believed that she fit the role perfectly," he said.

Discussing his process for casting actors in various roles for the 1980 movie 'Karz,' he stated, “While scripting ‘Karz,’ Kamini’s part stood out as significant—it’s a dignified yet complex one. Balancing dignity with criminality requires substantial effort from both directors and writers when crafting such nuanced characters. Despite her villainous traits, Kamini exhibits ambition. Developing these multifaceted personas demands considerable unseen labor during production. Each character is distinctively crafted—take Tina Munim and Simi Garewal, whose parts differ greatly. In essence, ‘Karz’ retells its narrative primarily via musical elements.”

Discussing the film's success, Subhash stated, "It astonishes me that this movie came out in 1980 because nowadays, children recognize me as 'Uncle from Karz.' The film continues to be watched and enjoyed even now. Surprisingly, it did not achieve significant commercial success right after its debut. People mentioned to me that you produced the film approximately ten years ahead of its prime time. Interestingly, the quality of the picture remains just as vibrant as when it first premiered back in 1980." (ANI)
