Zelenskyy Accuses Putin of Blocking Peace Talks Ahead of Crucial Saudi Meeting

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized again on Friday that additional pressure needs to be applied to Russia to secure a lasting truce.

Even though Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to a ' limited ceasefire', Moscow's assaults on Kyiv have persisted in recent days.

"For over a week, there has been a suggestion for an absolute cessation of hostilities. However, peace remains elusive as Putin refuses to agree to this proposal. Consequently, increased pressure on Russia is necessary," stated Zelenskyy during a shared press conference with his Czech counterpart in Kyiv.

Zelenskyy states that Putin continues to behave as an "aggressor" in the conflict, calling for increased diplomatic initiatives to guide this over three-year-long war toward a sustainable peace.

"Absolutely, we endorse the importance of robust diplomatic efforts, and our aim is to bring this conflict to a close at the earliest opportunity," stated Zelenskyy.

"But always keep in mind that effective diplomacy should exert pressure solely on the source of this conflict and the aggressor. Each day brings fresh proof that the root cause of this war is Putin and his regime," Zelenskyy emphasized.

Zelenskyy states that Ukraine has backed the U.S. proposal for an unconditional cessation of hostilities and an unconditional cease-fire since the outset. Nevertheless, he emphasized that Kyiv remains receptive to exploring any approach aimed at securing an unconditional cease-fire.

From the outset, Ukraine has backed the stance of the United States regarding an unequivocal cessation of hostilities. Why? Because in such a case, you wouldn’t require 10-20 discussions or lower-level meetings to negotiate terms.

"Absolutely, I believe there is a quicker solution. However, we won’t object to any format or measures leading to an unconditional cease-fire," stated the President of Ukraine.

Zelenskyy remains steadfast in asserting that Ukraine needs robust security assurances to shield itself from potential future aggression by Moscow. Although he acknowledges the significance of diplomatic efforts, he emphasizes that they alone cannot ensure lasting peace or be relied upon as a long-term solution.

The Ukrainian president emphasized that his nation keeps reasonable ties with the United Nations, including ongoing dialogue with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. However, Ukraine doesn’t see this organization as a replacement for forces or security assurances that could lead to halting the conflict.

Zelenskyy contended that although the UN significantly contributes to international diplomacy and fosters diplomatic efforts, it lacks both the authority and capability to ensure Kyiv’s safety should Putin choose to restart his offensive following any proposed truce agreement.

The remarks occur just a few days prior to Russian and Ukrainian representatives meeting again for further ceasefire discussions alongside US officials in Saudi Arabia.

In principle, Ukraine and Russia consented to a partial truce on Wednesday following phone conversations between U.S. President Donald Trump and both nations' heads of state earlier in the week. However, it was still uncertain which potential targets might be spared from attacks as part of this agreement.

Zelenskyy expresses optimism that future negotiations may lead to a lasting end to the fighting and "quietness in the skies."
