The Syracuse Nationals, a highly anticipated annual event for car enthusiasts, is just around the corner, and while excitement is building, concerns about potential traffic snarls are also on the rise. For many attendees, navigating the roads in and around Syracuse is a significant part of the experience, and the prospect of encountering delays due to construction and congestion is a source of anxiety.

One such attendee, Gary Besaw, a dedicated car aficionado who has been attending the Syracuse Nationals for years, expressed his apprehension about driving through construction zones. Besaw, who proudly showcases his Red 2000 Chevy Extreme, a vehicle that has been a part of his family for over two decades, worries about the potential damage that rough road conditions can inflict. "They always seem to have construction, and they don't tell nobody," he lamented, highlighting the unpredictable nature of road work. He fears that hitting bumps and potholes could compromise his car's suspension and damage its paint job, leading to costly repairs. "It's so low to the ground," Besaw explained, "It's not good for the suspension when you hit all these big, bad bumps and holes. It's expensive to repair."

Mary Helen Myrdek, another local resident and Syracuse Nationals enthusiast, shares similar concerns, particularly for her out-of-state friends who are unfamiliar with the area. She also worries about the impact of road conditions on her husband's vehicle. "We're careful when we go on 81," said Myrdek. "It's different now."

State DOT Assurances

However, the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) is working to alleviate these concerns and ensure a smoother travel experience for attendees. TeNesha Murphy, the State DOT’s public information officer, has assured drivers that the Syracuse Nationals are considered a "special event," and measures will be taken to minimize disruptions.

"During Syracuse Nationals weekend, we will not see any temporary lane closures or shoulder closures," Murphy stated. "Whatever's in place Friday at 6 a.m. will stay in place throughout the weekend." This commitment to maintaining consistent lane configurations throughout the event aims to prevent unexpected bottlenecks and keep traffic flowing as efficiently as possible.

To further mitigate potential delays, the DOT recommends that attendees plan their travel times strategically, advising people to leave before 9 a.m. or after 3 p.m. to avoid peak rush hour periods. Even during these busier times, the DOT plans to maintain at least two lanes open on major highways to minimize traffic congestion.

Event Organizer Perspective

Ed Levine, co-owner of the Syracuse Nationals, acknowledged the potential for traffic but emphasized that it is a common occurrence at large-scale events. "You go to an SU men's basketball game, there's traffic," Levine pointed out. "When there's an event you want to go to, there's traffic, this is Syracuse, it's going to be a great weekend, and it's probably going to be the biggest event you're going to go to all year." He encouraged attendees to embrace the excitement of the event and view traffic as a minor inconvenience.

Despite the traffic concerns, Mary Helen Myrdek remains undeterred and looks forward to attending the Syracuse Nationals with her husband. "We wait for it all year," Myrdek said, highlighting the event's significance and the strong tradition it represents.

Event Details and Additional Resources

The 25th-anniversary celebration of the Syracuse Nationals will take place from July 18th to 20th. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

For real-time updates on traffic conditions and potential delays, the State DOT recommends downloading their mobile app. This app provides valuable information about construction zones, accidents, and other factors that may impact travel times, allowing drivers to make informed decisions and adjust their routes accordingly. By staying informed and planning ahead, attendees can minimize the stress of traffic and fully enjoy the Syracuse Nationals experience.
