America's favorite buffet-table snack item, meet America's favorite bake sale treat. Chocolate chip cookie dough deviled eggs — a scoop of sweet, chocolatey cookie batter atop a hard-cooked egg white — will make their debut at this year's Ohio State Fair.
The Ohio Poultry Association, which sells a whole menu of adventurous deviled eggs at the fair each summer, unveiled its lineup July 15. The Ohio State Fair starts July 23 and runs through Aug. 3 in Columbus.
Compared with previous years' flavors such as bubble gum and cotton candy, the deviled egg headliner for 2025 is a not-overly-outrageous bite that the poultry association calls "an appetizer and dessert all in one." The cooked yolk is sweetened with brown sugar, powdered sugar and vanilla, mixed with mini chocolate chips and topped with a bit of cookie-shaped breakfast cereal.
They'll be sold at its Devilishly Good Food Stand inside the Taste of Ohio Pavilion and Beer Garden.
What other deviled egg flavors will be at the fair?
Five other flavors are new this year:
- Columbus Pizza: The cooked yolks are mixed with marinara sauce and topped with parmesan cheese and crispy-edged pepperoni.
- Hot Honey Everything: They're topped with a sprinkle of Everything Bagel seasoning and a drizzle of hot honey.
- Sriracha Peach: The hot sauce is paired with diced peaches for another sweet-heat combination.
- Spicy Crunchy: This one's just heat; the spicy filling is garnished with Flamin' Hot corn chips.
- Cranberry Feta: Sweet dried cranberries contrast with salty bites of feta cheese.
Returning flavors from previous fairs include dill pickle, hot dog, tomato bacon ranch, maple bacon crunch, buffalo chicken, Korean barbecue and maple bacon jalapeno.
You can buy them by the egg or in flights of flavors.
How do they come up with these flavors?
Jim Chakeres, executive vice president of the Ohio Poultry Association, keeps a running list on his cellphone of potential flavors for each year's fair. He and culinary adviser Cindy Kirkland began making and testing more than a dozen in late June.
They use cream cheese instead of mayonnaise to make the cooked yolks creamier.
Chocolate chip cookie dough stood out to their colleagues, who served as taste-testers.
"I'd lick the beaters on that one," Mandi Shirley, the association's event coordinator, said when she tried the eventual headliner.
The taste hews close to actual chocolate chip cookie dough; there are eggs in most baked goods, after all. The only difference is the cooked egg white that every filling rests upon.
