CSU launches Journal of Applied Science, Arts and Business

Christian Service University (CSU) has launched the Journal of Applied Science, Arts and Business (JASAB), its maiden academic publication, marking a major milestone in the university’s pursuit of academic excellence and research visibility.

The event, which was held on the university’s campus in Kumasi, brought together academics from other universities, faculty members, scholars and students to celebrate the maiden issue of the interdisciplinary journal.

In his keynote address, the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Prof. David Asamoah, highlighted the critical role academic journals play in the intellectual life of universities and the broader global knowledge economy.

“Academic journals hold a unique and indispensable place within the intellectual ecosystem. They are vessels through which new ideas are disseminated, validated and critiqued. Journals provide a credible record of research progress, connect scholars across disciplines and continents, and inspire innovation,” he mentioned.

He emphasised that journals are also essential to fostering a culture of inquiry, rigour and continuous learning among both faculty and students.

Touching on the sustainability of the journal, Prof. Asamoah outlined a number of strategies, including developing a strong pipeline of high-quality submissions, training editors and peer reviewers, securing consistent funding and partnerships, and instilling a deep sense of ownership within the university community.

He indicated that these efforts will ensure that JASAB evolves into a top-tier academic journal.

On his part, the Vice Chancellor, Christian Service University, Professor Samuel Kofi Afrane, traced the journey leading up to the inaugural edition of the journal, describing it as one of renewal and institutional commitment. “This journal will serve as a platform for interdisciplinary scholarly engagement, cutting-edge research and knowledge dissemination.”

He further explained that the launch of JASAB is not just a celebration of a new publication, but a reaffirmation of the university’s values, identity and future. It also aligns with CSU’s 50th anniversary and its recent charter granted in 2023, both of which, according to him, serve as catalysts for growth and transformation.

Highlighting the university’s broader research agenda, Prof. Afrane reaffirmed CSU’s vision of becoming a Christian university known for ethical leadership, excellence in research and academic impact.

He, however, noted that a research fund has been instituted to ensure the sustainability of the journal.

“Research is not optional. It is essential. That is why we have established a research fund—not to be handed out indiscriminately, but as a reward for genuine commitment to research and publication,” he said.

Prof. Afrane stressed that sustainability of the journal depends on three key pillars: leadership, research and funding. He urged faculty members to contribute regularly and to embrace collaborative, interdisciplinary research.

“I want to encourage all our scholars to write, but not in isolation. Articles co-authored by departments reflect the spirit of collaboration. A vibrant research culture does not emerge by chance. It requires effort, discipline and vision,” Prof. Afrane stressed.

He also made a passionate appeal to individuals and institutions to contribute financially to ensure the long-term sustainability of JASAB.
