Brussels' New Cultural Hub: KANAL-Centre Pompidou Takes Shape

A significant addition to the cultural landscape of Brussels is steadily emerging, promising to be a vibrant center for modern and contemporary art. The KANAL-Centre Pompidou, currently under development, is poised to open its doors in November 2026, marking the culmination of a transformative project that began in 2018 with the renovation of a historic structure.

The KANAL Foundation, entrusted by the Brussels-Capital Region government, envisions this space as more than just a museum. It aims to be a catalyst for social cohesion in a city known for its diverse and sometimes fragmented communities. The project seeks to address the challenges of co-existence in Brussels by using art and culture as unifying forces. Yves Goldstein, director of the KANAL Foundation, emphasizes the project's ambition to foster a sense of shared identity and understanding through artistic expression.

An International Partnership

Initially, the project faced a hurdle when the federal government declined to contribute its collection of modern and contemporary art. This led the KANAL Foundation to seek an international partner, ultimately forging a five-year agreement with the renowned Centre Pompidou in France.

This collaboration will see the KANAL-Centre Pompidou showcase works from the Parisian institution alongside its own growing collection. The partnership is designed to bring international expertise and prestige to the Brussels art scene, while also providing a platform for local artists and cultural initiatives.

A Multifaceted Cultural Space

Beyond exhibiting visual art, the KANAL-Centre Pompidou is designed to be a dynamic cultural hub hosting a variety of performances, including music, dance, and theater. The building will also become the new home for CIVA, a museum, library, archive, and publishing house dedicated to Belgian architecture from the mid-19th century to the 21st century. This integration of architectural heritage further enriches the center's cultural offerings.

Expanding Beyond the Museum Walls

Recognizing the importance of community engagement, the KANAL-Centre Pompidou allocates half of its space to public amenities. These include a restaurant, a rooftop bar, a print shop, a library, and a children's playground, aiming to make the center a welcoming and accessible space for everyone.

Furthermore, the project extends its reach beyond the physical building through an "external project" focused on promoting social cohesion in neighboring communities. These areas often exhibit significant socio-cultural diversity and economic challenges.

This outreach involves collaborations with schools, neighborhood associations, and youth groups in areas such as Molenbeek, Laken, and the North Quarter. These partnerships aim to co-create artistic and community-based projects, fostering a sense of ownership and participation among local residents. One notable example is a series of murals created by students from the Toots Tillemans secondary school in Molenbeek, working in collaboration with an artist selected by the KANAL Foundation.

Financial Considerations

The initial budget allocated by the regional government in 2018 was €150 million, excluding VAT, inflation, furniture, and equipment. As of now, the estimated cost of the project has risen to approximately €235 million. The institution will have an annual operating budget of €35 million and a staff of around 100 people.

The KANAL Foundation acknowledges the financial constraints facing the region and is actively exploring ways to optimize its operating budget. Various scenarios and trade-offs are being considered to mitigate potential subsidy reductions while preserving the core values of the project: culture for all and culture serving a social purpose.

Looking Ahead

The KANAL-Centre Pompidou is preparing to unveil its cultural program to the press in the first quarter of 2026. In the lead-up to its opening, the institution will serve as an institutional partner for the project that artist Miet Warlop will create to represent Belgium at the 61st Venice Biennale in May, further solidifying its commitment to supporting and showcasing contemporary art.

The KANAL-Centre Pompidou represents a bold vision for a cultural institution that actively engages with its community and strives to promote social cohesion through artistic expression. As it nears completion, anticipation is building for its grand opening and the transformative impact it is expected to have on the cultural landscape of Brussels.
