Target Issues Multiple Recalls Due to Safety Concerns and Undeclared Allergens

Retail giant Target is facing scrutiny after issuing several recalls affecting hundreds of thousands of products across its food and technology departments. The recalls stem from safety hazards, including fire risks and potential allergic reactions due to undeclared allergens. These incidents raise concerns about product safety protocols and the potential impact on consumer trust.

Anker Power Bank Recall: Fire and Burn Hazards

One of the most significant recalls involves approximately 480,000 Anker power banks due to the risk of overheating lithium-ion batteries. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reported that these power banks, manufactured in China, have been linked to numerous incidents, including fires and explosions. Specifically, there have been 33 reported incidents involving fires and explosions, with four resulting in burn injuries and property damage.

The recalled models include A1647, A1652, A1257, A1681, and A1689, which were sold at Target stores nationwide between August 2023 and June 2024, priced between $30 and $50.

Consumers who purchased these power banks are urged to immediately stop using them. Due to the increased fire risk, lithium-ion batteries require special disposal methods. Buyers are advised to contact their local municipal household hazardous waste (HHW) collection centers for guidance on proper disposal.

Anker is offering full cash refunds or gift cards as compensation. To claim a refund, consumers must provide a photo of the recalled power bank with the model number, serial number, their name, the date of the photograph, and the word 'recalled' written on the device in permanent marker. Anker will then provide instructions for returning or disposing of the recalled units.

Undeclared Allergens in Vegan Pasta Products

Another major recall involves Gooder Foods vegan pasta products, which are being recalled due to undeclared allergens. The company is voluntarily recalling specific lots of Vegan Is Believin' Plant Based White Cheddar with Spirals because they may contain milk, an ingredient not listed on the packaging. Similarly, certain lots of Here Comes Truffle Creamy Truffle Flavored Cheddar and Shells are being recalled due to the potential presence of cashew, another undeclared allergen.

The presence of undeclared allergens poses a significant risk to individuals with milk or tree nut allergies. It is estimated that millions of people are affected by these allergies. Reactions can range from mild symptoms like hives and rashes to severe, life-threatening anaphylaxis, characterized by throat swelling and breathing difficulties.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall notice stating that individuals with milk or cashew allergies face the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products. The recalled products were produced between April 7 and 15, with best buy dates ranging from July 7 to 15, 2026. They were distributed to stores across the country between April and August.

The vegan pasta is sold in 5.25oz packaging with the UPC 850031990074, while the truffle product is sold in 6oz packaging with the UPC 850031990159.

Consumers are advised to return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund and to contact the FDA or Gooder Foods to report any adverse reactions.

Southwest-Style Burrito Bowl Recall: Undeclared Shrimp

Target has also recalled over 57,000 Good & Gather Southwest-Style Burrito Bowl Blend meals after undeclared shrimp was discovered in the product. The manufacturer, One Frozen, initiated the voluntary recall due to concerns that the undeclared shellfish could trigger allergic reactions.

Shellfish allergies are common and can cause reactions ranging from mild to severe, including life-threatening anaphylaxis. Symptoms may include facial swelling, diarrhea, hives, and dizziness.

The affected burrito bowls were sold at Target stores in all 50 states. These mislabeled products were distributed starting April 17. Consumers are urged to check their freezers for products with the following lot codes: 5055-1, L5055-2, L5055-3, L5055-4, L5055-5, and L5055-6. The products are packaged in red 'steam in a bag' packages, weigh 12 ounces, and have a 'Best Used By' date of August 24, 2026. Customers who find the recalled product are advised to dispose of it and contact Target guest relations for a full refund.

Financial Implications of Product Recalls

Product recalls can be incredibly expensive for retailers. Direct costs include expenses related to retrieving, transporting, and disposing of the recalled items. However, the indirect costs can be even more substantial, encompassing lost sales, damage to brand reputation, and potential legal fees. These factors highlight the critical importance of robust product safety measures and quality control procedures.
