A Sydney café known for its "dog-friendly" atmosphere has found itself in hot water after receiving a hefty fine for allowing its canine mascot to roam freely, including within the kitchen area. La Bottega, a popular establishment in Leichhardt, a suburb in Sydney's inner west, was slapped with an $880 penalty by the Inner West Council following a customer complaint. The council has warned the café that further fines could be issued if the practice continues.

The incident stemmed from a disgruntled customer who left a scathing one-star review, alleging they were ejected from the café after raising concerns about the presence of the owner's dog, Pongo, a dachshund, in the kitchen. Pongo had become a beloved fixture at La Bottega, often greeting customers and adding to the café's welcoming ambiance.

The café owners took to social media to share the disappointing news with their followers. In an emotional post, they explained that they had been forced to make alternative arrangements for Pongo's care during business hours. "With a very heavy heart, I need to share some news," the post began. "The council has fined us $880 and informed me that they'll continue to fine us daily if Pongo is here during the week."

As a result, Pongo will now spend his weekdays at daycare, meaning he will no longer be present to welcome customers and their own canine companions. Despite the setback, the café owners vowed to fight for Pongo's return. "But there's always light at the end of the tunnel," they wrote. "I'll keep fighting to bring Pongo back where he belongs, greeting our customers in the place he loves to call home."

The controversy began with the negative review, which accused the café of violating health and safety regulations. "Please be aware that they have dogs roaming freely inside, including the kitchen area, which is very clearly illegal," the review stated. The customer claimed that when they questioned the practice, the owners simply responded, "They are the owners!"

The reviewer further stated that they had reported the café to the council and the Food Authority. "I took a picture as I am intending to report it to the council and the Food Authority, and when they saw that they became very disrespectful and literally threw us out of the café," the review continued. The reviewer concluded by expressing their shock at the "unprofessional and arrogant behaviour" and vowed to pursue the matter further.

The online reaction to the incident has been divided. Some commenters sided with the complainant, emphasizing the importance of hygiene and food safety standards. One person wrote, "But the dog was in the kitchen which is a health and safety hazard?? Why are these commenters fighting to have a dog in a restaurant kitchen?" Another added, "So all these people saying it's ok would be fine if it were rats instead? I'm a dog lover, but do not want a dog in the kitchen of a restaurant."

However, many others have voiced their support for La Bottega and its dog-friendly policy. Some argued that if customers were uncomfortable with the presence of a dog, they could simply choose to dine elsewhere. One supporter commented, "If you don’t like it, don’t go." Another pointed out the prevalence of pets in domestic kitchens, saying, "And how many people have pets at home that are in the kitchen and on counters I wonder."
