Let's talk wearable tech. Maybe you're not training for the Dubai Marathon or hitting the gym every day, but keeping track of your steps and staying generally active is something many of us strive for. And when it comes to smartwatches, the focus often lands on gadgets that provide insights into sleep patterns and, for women, menstrual cycles. But what if you could have it all, and more? Enter the Huawei GT6 watch.
After swapping out my usual smartwatch for the Huawei GT6, starting with a visit to the Huawei flagship store in Paris and a cycling tour of the city, I was eager to see if this device lived up to the hype. Huawei claims to be a leading brand in wearable tech, which is a pretty big statement. So, how does the GT6 perform?
Design and Aesthetics
The GT6 watch comes in two sizes: 46mm and 41mm. I chose the 41mm version, as it seemed more versatile for both everyday wear and workouts. Despite its recent launch price of £229.99, it’s already seeing discounts, with the price dropping to £176.99 using the code HUAWEIUK10 - keep an eye out for sales! Plus, there might even be a voucher at checkout.

Crafted from stainless steel, the watch feels incredibly durable yet remains lightweight on the wrist. There's a choice of five straps. The chain strap is perfect for a chic, sophisticated look, while the fluoroelastomer strap is ideal for workouts, offering comfort and breathability. Some smartwatches have caused skin irritation, but after a month of wearing the Huawei GT6, I haven't experienced any issues.
The round watch face features a bezel, a button, and a rotating "Crown" for navigation, along with a lower button. Alternatively, you can use the touchscreen. The straps are easily interchangeable – a simple flick of a switch allows you to detach one strap and clip on another.

While I opted for the smaller face, it's not overly petite. The 41mm size fits my wrist perfectly, without feeling cumbersome or getting lost on my arm.
The 1.47-inch AMOLED display is crystal clear and bright, a design improvement by Huawei to ensure visibility even in direct sunlight.
HUAWEI WATCH GT 6 41 mm

This watch is made from stainless steel, making it durable, lightweight, and stylish. The interchangeable straps attach easily to the watch face. The 1.47-inch AMOLED screen provides a bright, clear display. You can navigate using the touchscreen or the button and "Crown" on the side. It offers a range of health and wellness features, including workout monitoring, heart rate tracking, sleep analysis, and even menstrual cycle tracking. You can also receive messages, calls, play music, take photos, and more. The 41mm watch is compatible with five different colored straps to match your style.
Functionality and Features
Beyond its design, the GT6 boasts a range of useful features. Of course, it tells the time, syncing automatically to your time zone via your smartphone (iOS or Android). This is especially handy when travelling.
You can also connect the watch to your messages, WhatsApp, calls, emails, and social media accounts. However, you can customize these notifications to avoid constant distractions. You can read and respond to messages, play music, take photos and screenshots, and even record voice memos.
Health and Fitness Tracking
The GT6 excels in health and fitness tracking.

While most smartwatches track heart rate, steps, calories burned, and distance, the GT6 takes it further. Huawei has enhanced its Sunflower Positioning System to improve positioning accuracy using GNSS algorithms. This means it accurately detects your workouts, pauses when you stop, and precisely measures your route. The watch maps your route close to buildings for a more accurate reading of distance.
One standout feature is the ability to download a route before your workout. The watch will then keep you on track, even without a signal. This feature was perfect for cycling around Paris, providing audible directions so I didn't have to keep checking my phone.
The watch also includes pre-programmed workouts, such as indoor and outdoor cycling, running, skipping, and more. When cycling, it allowed me to select the bike style and weight for more accurate workout tracking.

The GT6 functions as a watch, phone, laptop, and personal trainer, measuring key health metrics and suggesting plans to help you achieve your fitness goals.
Emotional Wellbeing
The GT6 takes wellness tracking to a new level with its Multi-Dimensional Emotional Wellbeing functions. While other devices track sleep cycles and body temperature, the GT6 provides more in-depth metrics. It tracks heart rate, menstrual cycle, blood oxygen levels, sleep stages, wake-up rate, and respiratory rate.
But it goes further, dividing your emotions into 12 categories: pleasant, unpleasant, and neutral moods, each with four levels (e.g., relaxed, satisfied, discouraged, anxious). This ability to detect 12 emotions is unique. Depending on your mood, you can access breathing exercises or identify triggers. The app allows you to monitor these emotions and develop coping strategies.

The Pulse Wave Arrhythmia Analysis feature is also valuable, detecting heart health and proving useful for those with certain conditions.
Battery Life
The 41mm GT6 promises 14 days of light use or seven days of typical use on a single charge. While it charges quickly, the battery life may not quite last a full week with moderate use. The 46mm version offers longer battery life: 21 days with light use and 12 days with typical use.
In conclusion, the Huawei GT6 watch is a versatile device that combines style and functionality. It's a therapist, doctor (almost), wellness guru, personal trainer, and personal assistant all in one. It's a hybrid of a laptop, phone, watch, camera, and numerous health devices, making it a valuable addition to your daily life in the UAE.
