Whether you like yours with marshmallows, whipped cream, a splash of Baileys or all three, there's nothing like a hot chocolate at Christmas.

A recent survey by European ferry operator DFDS found that hot chocolate is the winter drink Brits look forward to most when travelling, beating mulled wine and festive coffee.

What's more, nearly nine in ten Brits say they make a point of trying the local hot chocolate when visiting a new city.

To find out which European city offers the best hot chocolate, researchers analysed thousands of Google reviews from more than 2,000 cafés, bakeries, chocolateries and other venues.

Read on to find out which cities came out on top as Europe’s ultimate hot chocolate destinations to visit this winter.

Budapest, Hungary

Taking the crown, Budapest is officially Europe’s best city for hot chocolate, earning an impressive sentiment score of 95.7.

The city is renowned for its rich drinking chocolate and atmospheric winter settings, making it a standout destination for chocolate lovers.

Hot chocolate is a significant part of the city's cafe culture, with famous spots like Noir Chocobar, Gerbeaud Café, and Stühmer offering artisanal versions, ranging from traditional to modern twists like teddy bear-shaped drinks or single-origin bean-to-bar options.

The good news for hot chocolate lovers is that you can fly from London Stansted to Budapest in January for just £22 with Ryanair.

Rome, Italy

In second place, Rome scores 95.3, with visitors drawn to its decadent Italian cioccolata calda – famously thick, smooth and often served alongside fresh pastries.

In Rome, hot chocolate is a rich, thick, pudding-like treat made with real dark chocolate, milk, and often a touch of cornstarch or flour for velvety texture, perfect for dipping pastries.

It's a decadent, spoonable dessert, not a watery drink, found in traditional bars and specialised cioccolaterias like Amir Roma, Maravè, or Said dal 1923.

Expect deep flavour, usually served with biscotti or cream.

Rome's historic setting, paired with indulgent cafés, has made it a beloved spot for those wanting a more luxurious hot chocolate experience.

Bucharest, Romania

Bucharest ranks third with a score of 94.1.

The city’s café culture has surged in recent years, with artisan chocolate shops and speciality drinks taking centre stage.

Romanian Hot chocolate (ciocolată caldă) is a rich, thick, creamy drink, similar to Italian cioccolata calda, often served with whipped cream.

Popular spots like Mara Mura, The Urbanist, Chocoloco and Chocolat reinvent classic hot chocolate with unique flavours, speciality toppings and modern twists on traditional recipes.

Nice, France

Nice secures fourth place with a sentiment score of 94.0.

French hot chocolate (chocolat chaud) is perfect for a winter 'goûter' (afternoon break) or breakfast, served as a sophisticated ritual to savour, unlike lighter international versions.

The city’s vibrant café scene combines classic French patisserie traditions with high-quality cocoa, offering hot chocolate that’s both indulgent and memorable.

Lisbon, Portugal

Earning its spot in the top five, Lisbon scores 91.8.

Visitors can enjoy its velvety, deeply flavoured hot chocolates among the city’s growing number of boutique chocolate cafés.

Lisbon's hot chocolate offers a decadent, gourmet treat, sometimes paired with churros or alongside artisanal chocolate bars.

The city’s sunlit streets and inviting outdoor terraces add to the charm, making each café visit a uniquely enjoyable experience.

Among the top spots are Bettina & Niccolo Corallo, Chocolataria Equador and Pasteis de Belem.
