A Colombian military cargo plane carrying approximately 110 soldiers crashed in the southern Amazon region on Monday. Authorities reported that at least one person died and 77 others sustained injuries in the incident.

Details of the Crash

The aircraft, a Lockheed Martin C-130 Hercules, went down shortly after departing from Puerto Leguízamo. This remote municipality is located in the Putumayo department, near the borders of Peru and Ecuador. The Colombian Ministry of Defense confirmed the crash and stated that rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.

Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his deepest sympathies to the families affected and urged against speculation until official information becomes available. He described the event as "deeply painful for the country."

According to General Carlos Fernando Silva, commander of the Colombian Air Force, a total of 125 individuals were on board the plane. This included 114 passengers and 11 crew members. The Air Force further reported that at least 77 people were rescued from the crash site with injuries, and rescue efforts were ongoing. The plane was en route to another city within Putumayo province, transporting the 110 soldiers.

General Silva stated that specific details of the crash were not yet known, beyond the fact that the plane experienced a problem and descended approximately two kilometers from the airport. Two aircraft, equipped with 74 beds, were deployed to transport the injured to hospitals in Bogotá and other locations.

Images circulating on Colombian media depicted a large column of smoke rising from a field near the crash site, with military units converging on the area. President Gustavo Petro indicated that authorities were prioritizing emergency response efforts as more information surfaced. Videos shared by local media outlets showed a black cloud of smoke billowing from the crash site and a truck carrying soldiers speeding towards the location.

President Petro's Response

Colombian President Gustavo Petro addressed the crash on social media, highlighting that military modernization has been a presidential priority but has encountered "bureaucratic difficulties." He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, "I will not grant more time; it is the lives of the young people that are at stake."

President Petro reiterated his commitment to modernizing the strategic air fleet and his request for the immediate acquisition of helicopters and transport aircraft. He aims to enhance the nation's transportation and troop mobility capabilities, particularly in regions significantly impacted by the failure of previously acquired Russian helicopters, which are now subject to a veto.

He expressed his hope for no fatalities in what he termed a "horrific accident that should never have happened." The President also noted that, contrary to some reports, the military's operational capacity has been declining for fifteen years, and his administration's decision has been to completely overhaul its armament.

Understanding the Lockheed C-130 Hercules

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a highly versatile military transport aircraft. Its first flight took place in 1954, developed in response to the U.S. Air Force's need for a plane capable of airlifting troops over medium distances to short, often rudimentary, airfields.

Key features of the C-130 include:

  • Spacious Cargo Hold: A large, unobstructed, and fully pressurized cargo bay that can be quickly reconfigured for various purposes, including carrying troops, medical stretchers, passengers, or for air-dropping troops and equipment into combat zones.
  • High-Wing Design: This configuration positions the cargo floor at a convenient truck-bed height above the ground.
  • Rear Loading Ramp: An integrated ramp at the rear allows for easy "roll-on/roll-off" loading and unloading of cargo and vehicles.
  • Robust Capabilities: The C-130 is renowned for its significant lift capacity, long operational range, and ability to land on austere airfields, making it a true tactical airlifter.

Lockheed Martin reports that the C-130 family comprises 11 variants, designed to support over 16 distinct mission requirements. The aircraft has been utilized for a wide array of operations, including dropping bombs, retrieving satellites in mid-air, conducting reconnaissance missions, and engaging ground targets with cannons.

Colombia acquired models of the C-130 Hercules in the 1960s and has undertaken modernization efforts on older aircraft in recent years.
