A teenage girl found dead alongside her boyfriend sent her mother a final message saying 'goodnight, I love you' before the pair died from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning, an inquest opening heard.

Cherish Adele Bean, 15, and Ethan Harry Slater, 17, were described as 'fit and well' before being discovered unresponsive at a holiday park last month.

They had been staying at a lodge known as the Man Cave at Little Eden Holiday Park near Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

An inquest hearing into their deaths on February 18 was told that four suspects had been arrested in an ongoing criminal investigation into 'gross negligence manslaughter involving carbon monoxide poisoning'.

A boiler recovered from the couple's lodge is also being forensically examined.

Opening the inquests at East Riding Coroner’s Court, area coroner Paul Marks told how the teenagers had been on a family holiday to the lodge park, near the village of Carnaby.

He said: 'The family spent the night together and Cherish and Ethan were both fit and well.

'Cherish left the family for the smaller cabin next door, with Ethan at 9pm to watch TV.

'She returned to the main cabin at 9:50pm complaining of a headache, spoke with her mother and had Calpol as the family had no paracetamol.'

'Cherish went back to bed in the small lodge and texted her mother at 10.20pm to say goodnight and that she loved her.

'The circumstances were similar for Ethan, who went back to the cabin at a similar time.'

Cherish and Ethan, from Sheffield, South Yorkshire, were discovered dead the following morning in Cabin 31 - known as the 'man cave'.

The coroner's court was told that police arrested and interviewed four suspects connected with the management and maintenance of the site.

Outlining the investigation so far, DCI Ben Robinson said: 'We have obtained witness accounts from family and friends of the deceased.

'We have spoken to numerous persons who contacted the police reporting that they had also stayed at the Little Eden Country Park and in particular the man cave.'

DCI Robinson added: 'We've conducted examination of all of the cabins at the Little Eden site, consulted with the Health and Safety Executive and specialist gas engineers to support with the forensic evaluation of a boiler recovered from the man cave.

'We've consulted with the National Crime Agency to provide specialist support and guidance for the investigation of gross negligence manslaughter including carbon monoxide poisoning.'

DCI Robinson said family liaison officers had been deployed to support both families as the investigation continues.

A precise medical cause of death for the teenagers has not yet been formally confirmed.

Three men aged 27, 33 and 42 who were arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter have since been released on conditional bail. A fourth person had also been arrested and bailed.

In an emotional tribute released through police, Cherish’s mother said she was 'shattered' by her daughter's death.

She said: 'My perfect girl, my angel, has left this world and we are broken as a family. I am broken as a mother, and I will never ever be the same again.

'If you know me, I live and breathe my babies, and we were away for a few nights making the best memories ever. We have had the best life together and it has been ripped from under us.

'There are no words, I am shattered and will never recover. Hug your children tonight you do not know how lucky you are.

'Ethan, bless you darling, such a good boy with a kind heart and I loved you like my own.'

In the police-issued tribute, Ethan's mother said: 'Ethan was the most beautiful young man to walk the earth. He was generous, loving, charming and kind.

'He would help anyone and was a strong family man. He took care of himself and loved his mum, stepdad, brothers and sister.

'There's not one person who would dislike him even if they tried. His smile was contagious, and he could light up any room he walked into.

'Ethan, you will always be remembered for the amazing young man you were, and the one you were destined to be. We hope you know how loved you are our boy, rest well and keep the table warm for us up there.

'Cherish was the apple of Ethan's eye, everyone could see how smitten they both were. She was beautiful, elegant, and made Ethan happy. We know you will keep each other young and safe.

'Look after each other. Rest in peace.'

The coroner expressed his condolences to both families following the short hearing.

Mr Marks said: 'I would like to extend my condolences to members of these two young people's families at their tragic and unexpected loss.'

The full inquest will take place at a future date yet to be fixed.

A spokesperson for the Health and Safety Executive previously said: 'We are aware of the incident and assisting Humberside Police and East Riding of Yorkshire Council with their enquiries.
