A Love Story Rooted in Music and Shared Passions

Music has always played a significant role in the lives of Mick Medew and Ursula Collie, two individuals in their mid-50s who found love through their shared passion for live music. Their journey began over a decade ago in Brisbane, where they became life partners and musical collaborators.

Love takes many forms — romantic, platonic, heartbreaking, or surprising. The Love Story series explores these different dimensions of love. If you have your own story to share, feel free to contribute.

Here are the words of Mick and Ursula, reflecting on their unique journey together.

Discovering Each Other Through Music

Ursula recalls how she first learned about Mick Medew. “I didn’t know about this Mick Medew as a rock star until I joined Facebook,” she said. She was part of a local Facebook group where discussions about a band called the Screaming Tribesmen sparked her interest. After listening to them, she thought they were quite good and soon got introduced to Mick. That was in 2015, and they remained friends for a year.

Mick, on the other hand, had been single for several years after his marriage ended. He dated a few people but nothing worked out. At 55, he decided he would stay single, thinking he wasn’t meant to be with anyone. However, everything changed when he met Ursula.

Love at First Date

Mick described how things changed overnight from their first date. “We had talked before, and I had a good feeling about things,” he said. Ursula added, “After the kiss in the driveway after our first date, I thought, oh yes, this is going to work.”

Navigating their relationship wasn’t without challenges. Mick was taking care of his mother, who was in her 90s, which made dating more difficult. Ursula would visit him a couple of nights a week, staying after he put his mother to bed before driving home. Mick would come over once a week or so. This pattern continued for a couple of years, but neither felt rushed.

Mick explained, “Because I had the commitment with my mum, I wasn’t sure how I was going to go with Urs, but she never put me under any pressure. She let me look after my mum, and I was very thankful for that.”

Moving In Together and Getting Married

In 2018, both of their mothers passed away, and Mick moved in with Ursula. She had lived in the house since 2008 as a renter, and in 2020, they bought it using an inheritance from both of them. Ursula, who was in her 50s and working as a nanny, was worried about her future as the kids grew older. She expressed gratitude for their new home, saying it brought her a sense of security and peace.

Mick and Ursula got engaged in 2019, but due to the pandemic, they didn’t get married until 2021. Ursula was a first-time bride at 61. She had seen a white dress with gold beading in the 90s and vowed to wear it if she ever married. Thirty years later, she fulfilled that promise.

Family and New Beginnings

Mick doesn’t have children of his own, and he doesn’t regret it. “Being a musician for such a long time at a young age, I think I was a little too wrapped up in myself. I’m not sure whether I would have been a good dad,” he said. However, he enjoys being part of Ursula’s grandchildren's lives. “They’re just both really nice kids, and they want to be involved with me. It’s really lovely.”

Ursula noted that the kids are only seven and three, so Mick has been a constant presence in their lives.

Finding Harmony Through Music

Ursula was part of an 80s band called Ironing Music and played bass in a country band, though nothing serious. In 2019, she found a keyboard, cleaned it, and started playing. She learned to play “Cars” by Gary Numan on YouTube, and Mick joined in. From there, their musical collaboration evolved.

At 66, Ursula still loves performing. “I can still jump around and sing, and when I turn around, I’ll look at Mick, and we’ll eye each other and start jumping together or smiling. That’s a nice feeling,” she said. Mick, who lives off his royalties, also earns some from Ursula’s song “Punk Grandma.”

Simple Living and Deep Connection

Mick and Ursula aren’t big spenders. They value simplicity and the joy of being together. Mick admires Ursula’s positive outlook and happiness, which he says is contagious. Ursula, in turn, appreciates Mick’s easygoing nature and sense of humor.

Mick feels lucky that they can be together almost all the time. He notes that other couples in bands often face challenges due to touring schedules, but for him and Ursula, being together is a blessing.

A Lasting Partnership

Their story is one of love, resilience, and shared passions. From their early days of meeting online to building a life together, Mick and Ursula have created a relationship that continues to thrive. Whether through music, family, or simple moments of connection, their bond remains strong.
