A 60-year-old man showed incredible courage when he tried to defend himself against an 'Eastern European' knifeman with his bare hands. The incident occurred near a golf club in Stafford, where the victim was found on a bench with stab wounds, after a member of the club raised the alarm. The victim is currently in critical but stable condition in intensive care. A barman at the golf club shared his thoughts on the incident, expressing hope that the police will soon catch the culprit. The assault took place while he was walking along a public footpath near Stafford Castle Golf and Leisure Club on Thursday evening. After being attacked from behind, he managed to walk to the clubhouse, where he collapsed on a memorial bench outside, bleeding heavily.
As a four-club cup challenge was taking place on the course, 48 male golfers were carefully taking their shots, while a dozen police officers remained at the scene. The footpath where the victim was assaulted, which leads up the hill to the castle, remains cordoned off. However, the bench where he was found slumped on by a golfer was visible after a police tent covering it had been lifted.
The victim is not a member of the club, according to a barman who worked at the club on the day of the incident. He explained that a member found the injured man and immediately called emergency services. The barman, who chose to remain anonymous, said: "The club was open late on Thursday, thankfully. I wasn't working, but I heard what happened because it was all over Facebook and the local and national news."
He added that no one seemed to have witnessed the attack, but the man managed to get to the club where he collapsed on the bench outside, bleeding heavily. The barman also mentioned that the man had injuries all over his body and legs, with defensive wounds on his hands, suggesting he was trying to fight off his attacker.
The barman, speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, emphasized the severity of the incident. He described it as a "vicious and unprovoked attack" and expressed concern that it happened so close to the club and course. He noted that the area is usually safe, and the man was just walking nearby when he was attacked randomly. The route is popular, with a 15-minute walk up to the castle.

He was very badly injured, and luckily, the golfer managed to raise the alarm quickly to get help. She mentioned that many people use the footpath on the other side of the course to go up to the castle, and many kids and adults cross the grounds to play the nine-hole foot golf course.
She added that police have conducted house-to-house inquiries, but no one saw or heard anything untoward. It is frightening to think that a man capable of attacking an elderly man so violently is still on the loose. However, she noted that the presence of officers gives some comfort and protection, as it seems very unsafe.
Emergency services rushed to the golf club off Newport Road shortly before 7pm on Thursday after reports of a man with multiple stab wounds. He was taken to the hospital, where he received treatment for his injuries.
