This video was made with the help of artificial intelligence.

The quick advancement of AI is changing Houston's educational institutions and job market, as the technology assists in creating course materials and grading assignments, and encouraging a new eraApple manufacturing facility in the region.

But the new encyclicalPope Leo XIV issued a serious warning and guidance for this new technological age, advising governments and users to "disarm" artificial intelligence—meaning "not to reject technology, but to stop it from taking control over humanity," the pope stated.

Ryan Miller, a central fellow in philosophy at theUniversity of St. Thomas, helps explain what that signifies for the Houston region and society at large.

This FAQ has been shortened for brevity and clarity.

This is a lengthy text, but provide a brief summary. What message does 'Magnifica humanitas' communicate to Catholics and the wider audience?

The encyclical aims to examine new technologies and state that they can be utilized for beneficial purposes or for harmful ones, with the outcome largely depending on how the developers construct them... as well as on the individuals who use them.

Why did Pope Leo select this subject for his initial encyclical? What does it reveal about this period?

I believe Pope Leo XIV viewed this period as a new age of transformation... when individuals experience a sense of displacement, unsure of what holds significance and what does not, uncertain where to seek direction, possibly feeling separated from their families, places of worship, and social groups.

You have recognized three issues that Pope Leo highlighted which should be of concern to students and teachers. What are they?

The first point he mentions is how simple it is to get results. This promotes an over-reliance on pre-existing solutions. You start thinking, "Why should I put in the effort to figure it out when I can just type something in and instantly have the answer?" This tends to diminish individual creativity and critical thinking.

The second is the perception of neutrality. We fail to recognize that these artificial intelligences and their responses embody cultural biases held by their creators and trainers.

What's the last consideration?

The replication of human interaction.

The threat lies less in someone thinking they are talking to another person, and more in the slow loss of the motivation to build real connections. This is a serious concern for our students now... It turns into an isolated environment.

Did Pope Leo provide any useful guidance on how to properly handle this technology?

The first point is to be completely clear, reminding ourselves what AI truly is ... It's simply mimicking human intelligence.

It must be a way to reconnect with a genuine relationship.

How could you implement this in settings such as schools?

If there's something you didn't grasp from the book and you turn to AI... that's a chance to engage with the teacher. What were the advantages of the AI response, and what was lacking in the AI response? You're witnessing how it's gradually fostering a sense of community within the classroom.

In my discussions with college students, several individuals have expressed a common sentiment that AI is diminishing their intellectual abilities or restricting their social interactions. What does the encyclical state regarding human potential?

The fundamental concept is that people have the ability to exhibit true intelligence, authentic decision-making, real fellowship among themselves, and are elevated through divine favor to a relationship with God.

AI can be utilized in this manner, where AI introduces itself as a conversational resource ... (For instance,) AI provides you with examples of books to read. This can be highly beneficial for students who might not know where to begin. These are situations where it guides you toward an authentic human community, whether with your classmates or even with authors.

When it's utilized in a manner that makes humans feel as if we aren't truly performing the task, but instead simply inputting a prompt like "Give me an essay," we've essentially transformed ourselves into the smallest cognitive machine, and we've now diminished our dignity—now we're accomplishing less than the computer.

The respect for workers is a key focus of Pope Leo's, and given the viral videos ofstudents booing commencement speakersThose who support AI also recognize that it is a topic of concern for some younger individuals.   As the local production of AI grows and becomes more embedded in various jobs, what caution does Pope Leo provide?

A severe situation not only leads to job losses, such as for software developers, ad copywriters... but also causes widespread societal disruption.

If you're simply ordering meals through DoorDash and the delivery is handled by a vehicle operated by artificial intelligence, along with other automated processes, there's a complete absence of human interaction. This is the main concern... as it leads to not only financial issues but also significant social challenges that complicate the resolution of economic problems.

To address economic challenges, individuals must unite, as demonstrated in the United States. Consider the Great Depression, where FDR introduced initiatives such as the Conservation Corps and the Public Works Administration, which involved people working together, possibly paying higher taxes. The advantage was that those who were jobless received food, job training, and opportunities to contribute positively to society.

What makes you believe that certain worries regarding AI have captured the attention of younger generations so strongly?

On one side, students clearly recognize the adverse effects of AI. They are worried about their employment prospects and might be observing that their peers are stepping back, with an increasing amount of content on their social media feeds and applications being created by artificial intelligence.

Occasionally, they feel that everyone is utilizing AI for their classes, so if I don't, it just makes me the one who's being taken advantage of.

What might active engagement with AI resemble according to this encyclical?

If you are (digitally) proficient, you have the ability to respond, by clicking the button that reads "I did not appreciate this answer."

From an economic perspective, we also demonstrate solidarity by not merely refusing change. We acknowledge the presence of automation and recognize that some jobs may eventually become outdated. For instance, there are no longer telephone switchboard operators, but we have strategies in place to retrain those individuals... Ensuring that community colleges remain accessible and affordable, among other measures.

A positive scenario is not one where technological advancement is absent... but rather one where this progress benefits all, offering those affected by it an alternative path instead of being left behind.
