A Moment of Magic in the FA Cup Final

LONDON: Antoine Semenyo delivered one of the most unforgettable goals in the history of the FA Cup final with a daring back-flick that secured Manchester City's 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday. The Ghanaian winger, who had been an inspired signing from Bournemouth in January, became the hero of the match as his improvised finish turned the tide in favor of City.

Semenyo's moment of brilliance came late in the second half when he took advantage of Erling Haaland’s cross to score a sublime goal that sent the City fans into raptures. This goal not only sealed City’s eighth FA Cup title but also marked their second piece of silverware this season after defeating Arsenal in the League Cup final in March.

The 26-year-old player has now joined an elite group of FA Cup final goal-scorers, including legends like Ricky Villa, Michael Owen, Roberto Di Matteo, and Steven Gerrard. Interestingly, Semenyo was born just a short distance from Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge stadium, adding an ironic twist to his achievement.

This third FA Cup win under Pep Guardiola ended City’s streak of two consecutive final losses against Crystal Palace and Manchester United. Guardiola, who has previously won the trophy in 2023 and 2019, has now claimed 20 major trophies during his decade-long tenure as City manager.

His focus is now on maintaining City’s slim hopes of securing a 21st piece of silverware by achieving a miracle in the Premier League title race. Currently on a 21-game unbeaten domestic run, City is five points behind leaders Arsenal if the Gunners defeat relegated Burnley on Monday.

Guardiola’s team can reduce the gap to two points with a win against Bournemouth in their penultimate match of the season on Tuesday. However, Arsenal would still guarantee their first English title since 2004 by winning against Palace on May 24.

Guardiola's Future Remains Uncertain

Ahead of his 24th appearance at Wembley with City, Guardiola humorously expressed his disappointment that there isn’t a stand named after him at the home of English football. Whether he will remain with City is still unclear. Throughout the season, speculation about his future has been constant, and with just one year left on his contract, the 55-year-old has yet to reveal whether he plans to stay or leave at the end of the season.

If this is indeed the end of an era for Guardiola, Semenyo ensured that he will depart with at least one more golden memory.

A Turbulent Season for Chelsea

For Chelsea, the loss was another setback in what has been a challenging campaign. They have not recorded a win in their last seven league games, leaving them in ninth place with little hope of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Under interim manager Calum McFarlane, Chelsea put up a valiant but ultimately ineffective performance, highlighting why frustrated fans protested against owners BlueCo before the match and chanted “we want our Chelsea back.”

Chelsea opted for a deep defensive setup, allowing City to dominate possession for much of the first half without being able to break through. The game was characterized by its cautious nature, reflecting the underperformance of both teams this season.

Haaland had several chances to open the scoring, including a shot wide from an acute angle and a powerful strike saved by Robert Sanchez. Chelsea felt aggrieved just before halftime when their penalty claim was denied after Joao Pedro was brought down by Abdukodir Khusanov.

Semenyo should have scored immediately after the break, heading over from six yards after meeting Nico O’Reilly’s cross. Moises Caicedo’s header was cleared off the line by Rodri after James Trafford fumbled a corner.

However, City finally delivered the decisive blow in the 72nd minute. Haaland made a clever run down the right side of the Chelsea area and crossed to Semenyo, who executed a perfect back-heeled finish into the far corner from close range. This goal proved to be the difference in a tightly contested match.
