US President Trump Delays Military Strike on Iran Amid Ongoing Peace Talks

US President Donald Trump has announced that he is postponing a planned military strike on Iran, citing ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the conflict. The decision comes after Iran sent a peace proposal to Washington, which Trump described as a potential breakthrough in resolving the tensions.

“There seems to be a very good chance that they can work something out. If we can do that without bombing the hell out of them, I’d be very happy,” Trump said during an appearance at the White House on Monday evening. This statement followed his initial announcement on social media, where he expressed hope for a peaceful resolution.

Trump revealed that he had originally planned “a very major attack” but decided to delay it “for a little while, hopefully, maybe forever.” He mentioned that America’s Gulf allies had urged him to wait for two to three days, believing a deal with Iran was close.

A New Peace Proposal from Iran

After receiving a new peace proposal from Iran, Trump instructed the US military to hold off on the scheduled attack. However, he also emphasized that the military should remain prepared for a full-scale assault if an acceptable deal is not reached. Despite this, no prior announcement of such an attack had been made, and Reuters could not confirm whether preparations were underway for a renewed conflict.

The pressure to reach an agreement that would allow the Strait of Hormuz to reopen has been significant. Trump has previously expressed hope that a deal was near, while also threatening heavy strikes on Iran if no agreement is reached.

Regional Leaders’ Influence

In his social media post, Trump noted that leaders from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates had requested a delay in the attack, stating that “a Deal will be made, which will be very acceptable to the United States of America, as well as all Countries in the Middle East, and beyond.” However, no specific details about the agreement were provided.

During a press conference, Trump reiterated that the United States would be satisfied if an agreement could be reached that prevents Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Iranian Response and Military Posturing

Despite the reported peace efforts, Iran remained defiant. State media issued statements warning the US and its allies against making further “strategic mistakes or miscalculations” in attacking Iran. They also claimed that their armed forces are “more prepared and stronger than in the past.”

Iran’s top joint military command, Khatam Al-Anbiya, warned that any renewed US attack would be met with a swift and decisive response. Ali Abdollahi, the commander of Khatam Al-Anbiya, stated: “Any renewed aggression and invasion … will be responded to quickly, decisively, powerfully, and extensively.”

Possible Developments in Negotiations

According to a senior Iranian source, the United States has agreed to release a quarter of Iran’s frozen funds — totaling tens of billions of dollars — held in foreign banks. Iran, however, wants all the assets released. The source also indicated that Washington has shown more flexibility in allowing Iran to continue some peaceful nuclear activity under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The US has not confirmed these claims. Meanwhile, Iran’s Tasnim news agency quoted an unidentified source as saying the US had agreed to waive oil sanctions on Iran during negotiations. However, a US official denied the report, calling it false.

Current Situation and Future Outlook

A fragile ceasefire is currently in place after six weeks of war that followed US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran. Although hostilities have largely subsided, drones have been launched from Iraq toward Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, apparently by Iran and its allies.

As the situation continues to evolve, the outcome of the ongoing negotiations will play a crucial role in determining the future of US-Iran relations and regional stability. The coming days will be critical in assessing whether a lasting peace can be achieved or if tensions will escalate once again.
