Two Killed as Car Crashes into Crowd in Leipzig

A vehicle crashed into a group of people in the historic downtown area of Leipzig, an eastern German city, on Monday, resulting in two fatalities and multiple injuries, according to officials.
A 33-year-old man from Germany was taken into custody on the spot, with authorities noting that his reasons remained unknown.
Germany has experienced multiple vehicle-ramming incidents in recent years, such as an attack on a Christmas market in Magdeburg in 2024, as well as events in Berlin and Munich.
In the most recent event in Leipzig, a Volkswagen Taigo vehicle veered from a large square in the historic town area into a bustling pedestrian street, covering hundreds of meters.
Hosam Algaer, a Leipzig resident originally from Libya, said he almost got hit by the vehicle before chasing it to try and assist the injured until the car stopped.

The vehicle came to a stop," he said. "There was a woman on the roof, and she ended up underneath the car, deceased. She had fallen from the top.
Fortunately, things didn't get any worse than they already were because of the yelling," he said. "People realized very quickly that an idiot was at the wheel and they ran away.
Michael Kretschmer, the head of Saxony state, which includes Leipzig, stated that two individuals lost their lives, noting that the event "leaves me deeply shaken."
We will use every means at our disposal to examine it promptly and thoroughly," he stated. "The rule of law will be applied with full severity.
Although authorities did not reach definitive conclusions about his intent, several individuals referred to the event as an "Amokfahrt" — a German expression indicating a violent spree fueled by some form of insanity.
Such actions were "frequently linked to mental instability," stated Armin Schuster, the interior minister of the Saxony state government.
Police stated late Monday that there is "no foundation in the current information" to suggest a political or religious motive on the part of the suspect.
A 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man, both holding German citizenship, perished in the event, they stated.
At least two individuals sustained severe injuries, while approximately 20 others received less serious harm, as reported by the fire department.
Police stated that the vehicle crashed into pedestrians on Grimmaische Street, a busy walking area in the old town featuring shops and historic structures.
The driver halted voluntarily, they mentioned.

Television footage displayed a white car with a severely damaged windshield and front bumper, with the street blocked off and surrounded by emergency vehicles.
Law enforcement officers were stationed in significant numbers throughout the city, home to approximately 600,000 residents, alongside fire department staff, medical responders, and two aerial units.
Officials stated the driver is under investigation for alleged offenses such as murder and attempted murder.
It was thought that he had worked by himself, according to the police, and there was no current threat in the city.
Leipzig seemed to be regaining its vitality rapidly, as individuals were seen seated at outdoor tables not far from the location of the incident, according to a reporter on the scene.
Germany has maintained a heightened state of vigilance against vehicle ramming attacks since December 2016, following an incident in which an individual linked to the Islamic State group drove a truck into a Berlin Christmas market.
In 2024, a Christmas market in Magdeburg was attacked by a Saudi individual who crashed a vehicle into the crowd, resulting in six fatalities and over 300 injuries.
A Saudi individual currently facing trial was a mental health professional who followed conspiracy theories, held intense anti-Islamic beliefs, and frequently voiced his anger towards German officials.
In February 2025, a woman and her daughter were killed, with approximately 30 others injured, when an Afghan man drove a vehicle into a procession in Munich.
The incidents occur amid rising tensions regarding immigrants in certain areas of Germany, following a significant arrival of asylum seekers and refugees in 2015.
Immigration and security have become prominent issues in German political discussions, contributing to the growth of the far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD).
