A High-Stakes Duel on the Nürburgring
A dramatic moment during the Nürburgring 24 Hours race between Max Verstappen and Maro Engel nearly ended both drivers’ chances of success. The incident occurred as they were competing for the lead, with their Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars making contact at high speed along the Dottinger Straight. Engel was forced to take to the grass to regain control, but he managed to recover without any major issues.
A Two-Horse Race at the Front
With several top contenders suffering setbacks in the early stages of the race, the competition has narrowed down to a battle between two Winward Racing-operated Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars. The #16 Audi R8, the #84 Lamborghini Huracan, and the #911 Porsche 911 all faced mishaps, leaving the race in the hands of the two Mercedes entries.
The #80 Mercedes, which started in 25th place with Maro Engel behind the wheel, climbed up the rankings throughout the night. Verstappen, driving the #3 Mercedes, spent over 20 minutes trailing Engel, who remained just a second ahead of him on every lap.
A Close Contest
Verstappen finally found an opportunity to overtake Engel on the Döttinger Straight, but he couldn’t create a significant gap. A lap later, Engel used the slipstream to catch up and pull alongside Verstappen as they approached Tiergarten. However, two slower cars were ahead, and with both Mercedes drivers closing in, space became limited.
As the two cars approached each other, they were forced into a door-to-door maneuver at around 270km/h. Engel ended up in the grass as he tried to slow down, but he managed to regain control and return to the track without further complications. He lost some time to Verstappen in the process.
Pit Stops and New Drivers
After the incident, both drivers made pit stops for a driver swap. Engel was replaced by Maxime Martin in the #80 Mercedes, while Jules Gounon took over the #3 car. With 13.5 hours elapsed, the #3 continues to lead by 15.5 seconds, with the #34 Aston Martin Vantage from Walkenhorst Motorsport in third place, nearly four minutes behind.
Engel shared his thoughts after the pit stop: “I had a good double stint. Our cars are running well, and I had a lot of fun with Max. Of course, the Nordschleife is special, a cool place. And driving through the night there with Max was really enjoyable. I hope we entertained the fans a bit – those who were still awake certainly did the right thing. Now I’m going to get some sleep and my teammates will take over.”
Verstappen’s Night Performance
Verstappen’s performance during the night stint showed that he adapted well to the challenging conditions. Unlike previous events, he hadn’t had much experience driving in the dark before this race. His aggressive pursuit of Engel mirrored his approach during his first double-stint, where he climbed from eighth place to the lead with multiple overtakes, including a daring move around the outside of the #47 Mercedes.
Key Moments and Future Prospects
The race has seen its share of drama, with the two Mercedes cars leading the pack despite the challenges. As the event progresses, the focus will be on how the teams manage their strategies and whether they can maintain their positions in the remaining hours.
With the Nürburgring 24 Hours continuing to unfold, fans can expect more intense battles and thrilling moments as the race reaches its climax. The performance of Verstappen and Engel has already set the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable event.
