Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing the way we live, work, and learn. However, its influence on education has sparked a heated debate, with concerns about its potential to undermine traditional learning methods. A leading educationist, Sir Anthony Seldon, has raised alarms about the negative effects of AI on children, warning that it could be making them "workshy" and less motivated.

Sir Anthony, who has served as the headmaster of some of the UK’s most prestigious private schools, argues that AI is "infantilising" young people by providing easy answers without requiring critical thinking or effort. He claims this is encouraging students to cheat and is eroding the integrity of education.

According to Sir Anthony, AI can be a powerful tool for education if used correctly. It has the potential to assist students with learning needs, especially those who may not have access to specialist teachers or for whom English is not their first language. Additionally, AI can offer challenges to bright and curious minds, helping them reach higher levels of understanding.

However, he warns that when AI is misused, it can lead to significant problems. Students are being given answers without engaging in the thought process required to truly understand the material. This lack of struggle and critical thinking is making them less curious, knowledgeable, and intelligent, while also increasing their insecurity and reluctance to work.

The Rise of AI-Enabled Cheating

The issue of AI misuse in education is not just theoretical. Recent reports from Ofqual, the regulator of exams in England, highlight a growing concern about students using advanced technology to cheat during exams. Sir Ian Bauckham, the head of Ofqual, warned that students might soon be using AI-enabled smart glasses to gain an unfair advantage during tests.

Ofqual data shows that mobile phone and smart device cheating has been the most common form of exam misconduct since 2018, with 2,225 cases recorded last summer alone. This trend is alarming, as it suggests that students are increasingly relying on technology to bypass the learning process.

A recent survey of over 1,500 pupils, mostly taking GCSEs or A-levels, found that 93% had used AI tools for schoolwork or revision. This widespread use of AI raises questions about how effectively students are learning and whether they are developing the necessary skills to succeed in the real world.

The Need for a National Plan

Sir Anthony emphasizes the urgent need for a national plan to address the challenges posed by AI in education. He calls for inspirational leadership and a coordinated approach to ensure that AI is used to enhance, rather than hinder, learning.

He also criticizes the current focus on social media bans, arguing that such measures will not address the deeper issues related to AI. Instead, he believes that AI should be a core priority for policymakers, particularly in light of its growing influence on education and employment.

The Role of Teachers and Schools

Teachers play a crucial role in guiding students through the complexities of AI. Sir Ian Bauckham suggested that stronger checks may be introduced in the future to prevent students from using AI in coursework. This could include more frequent teacher-student interactions and stricter requirements for referencing and source documentation.

He emphasized that students should not simply rely on AI to generate large amounts of content, such as writing 10,000 words on a historical topic. Instead, they should engage in meaningful research and develop their own ideas.

A Call to Action

Sir Anthony Seldon concludes his argument by urging education leaders to take immediate action. He stresses that the UK is "sleepwalking into disaster" and that the time to act is now. Without a clear strategy and strong leadership, the benefits of AI will be lost amidst the risks and challenges it presents.
