Rising Costs and Creative Solutions for World Cup Fans
As the World Cup kicks off, fans from England and Scotland are finding themselves in a tough spot when it comes to attending matches in person. With ticket prices, flights, and hotel stays soaring, many are choosing alternative ways to enjoy the tournament.
Around 65,000 UK supporters have paid high prices to follow the action in the US, Canada, and Mexico. However, not everyone is willing to spend thousands of pounds on travel and accommodation. Some are opting to watch the games from the comfort of their homes, while others are trading the sofa for a beach holiday in Europe.
Fan-Cations: A New Trend
A significant number of fans are planning what is being called a 'fan-cation'—a vacation that includes watching the World Cup. According to EasyJet Holidays, 27% of supporters are taking time off to watch the games abroad. This has led to some interesting conflicts at home, with 49% of 25-34-year-olds admitting they've argued with family or partners over where to watch the matches.
Hotels across Europe are capitalizing on this trend by promoting themselves as 'tournament-ready' resorts. These places offer extended all-inclusive hours and dedicated screening zones for fans. For instance, the Zeus Eleva Mirabello Bay in Crete is offering extended hours for screenings with noise-conscious zoning. Similarly, Alua Suites in Fuerteventura provides giant-screen stadium vibes in a theatre setting, complete with public viewing and private suites for some matches.

Cruise Holidays as an Alternative
Cruise companies are also seeing strong demand for last-minute trips where the World Cup will be shown on board. Major operators such as Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and Ambassador are planning to screen the games live on giant poolside screens and in dedicated lounges. Travel agency Iglu Cruise confirmed that matches will be broadcast live across their fleets, turning top decks and sports bars into fan zones.
The company offers various options, including a £1,829-per-person cruise on Norwegian Viva from the Greek islands to Istanbul, with a stay in Venice for 12 nights. Another option is a no-fly cruise on Ambassador's Ambience ship to the Norwegian Fjords for £1,028 per person. Royal Carribean also has a cruise on its Brilliance of the Seas liner across the Greek islands and Italy for £1,588 per person.
Dave Mills, chief commercial officer for Iglu Cruise, said: "Last-minute cruising where the World Cup games will be shown on board has seen strong demand. The ease of a cruise, with all the interesting ports, onboard entertainment, and full board is a given, then on top of that, the option to follow all the games in one of the bars or on the pool deck means no hassle or stress."

Pre-Tournament Action and Upcoming Matches
Before the main event, the Three Lions beat New Zealand 1-0 in a pre-tournament friendly in Tampa Bay. They will play a final warm-up game in Orlando against Costa Rica before heading to their tournament base in Kansas City.
England's first match is against Croatia in Dallas on June 17 at 9pm UK time, followed by Ghana in Boston on June 23 at 9pm and Panama in New Jersey on June 27 at 10pm. Scotland starts against Haiti on June 14 at 2am, then plays Morocco on June 19 at 11pm, both in Boston, before facing Brazil in Miami on June 24 at 11pm.
Dreams of Glory
Fans of the Three Lions are hoping their journey will end in glory on July 19, ending 60 years of hurt and winning the World Cup for the first time since 1966. Scotland, on the other hand, has qualified for their first World Cup since 1998, having never managed to get out of the group stage in any of their eight previous appearances.
Some Brits are spending their life savings to travel to the World Cup despite the challenges. Supporters face complex planning due to the logistics involved in attending a tournament spanning three countries. One England fan, @kbmedia11, shared his experience on TikTok, detailing how he spent £15,201 to attend seven matches, including the final. His expenses included tickets, accommodation, flights, food, and other expenses.
