Hitchin Lido, which first opened in 1938, has long been a beloved spot for outdoor swimming. The lido has recently received a much-needed facelift, thanks to a generous bequest from Hazel Jacobs, a regular visitor who passed away in April 2024. Her contribution helped fund new changing rooms, lockers, sinks, mirrors, and flooring, ensuring the facility remains welcoming for all users. Hazel was remembered as a cherished figure at the lido, often seen by the poolside.
North Herts Council highlighted how Hazel and her friends would swim a mile each summer to prove their endurance. Brenda Santimano, a friend of Hazel, shared that the lido had a positive impact on her life and the lives of many others. "Hazel’s bequest was made with precisely that community spirit in mind, intended for the benefit of everyone who enjoys this fantastic swimming facility," she said.
A Nostalgic Experience
For many locals, Hitchin Lido holds a special place in their hearts. One resident shared memories of growing up in Hitchin, where the pool was a staple of weekend activities. Their mother often recounted learning to swim there in the 1970s, when the pool was unheated. Even in winter, snow could be seen near the poolside, yet strict instructors showed no mercy.
Today, the pool is heated from mid-May and open until September 8, with an indoor pool available as well. Regulars like Dawn T, who has fond memories of the pool since the 1970s, praised its charm and the sense of community it fosters. "@freeman7hr described it as a 'lovely' place for an outdoor dip, adding: 'Even on a very hot and busy day during school holidays, there was space to sit quietly due to the large grounds.'"

For those truly committed to the lido experience, Hitchin is easily accessible from London. Trains from Finsbury Park take just 26 minutes, while a direct connection from London Bridge takes 48 minutes, passing through City Thameslink, Farringdon, and St Pancras.
