McDonald’s Reintroduces AI in Drive-Thru Orders
Two years ago, McDonald’s decided to stop using AI-powered voice ordering in its drive-thrus. The fast food chain had introduced the technology in over 100 restaurants across the US, but it kept having problems. Customers would sometimes get extra items or have strange orders. Now, McDonald’s is trying again with AI, but this time it's testing a completely new system in its drive-thrus.
People are not happy about the news, especially after the previous experience. Here's what's happening with McDonald’s AI trial.

The AI trial was announced at the McDonald’s Worldwide Convention in Las Vegas. It is part of the McDonald’s Next initiative, which aims to make McDonald’s the top choice for customers. The system is called Archy IQ and has been developed in partnership with Google. It is currently being tested in five stores across America.
Although the exact locations of the trial were not revealed, it was confirmed that more than one million transactions have already been processed through the system. About 90% of these have been completed without needing human help.
According to @McFranchisee on X (formerly Twitter), a McDonald’s franchisee who attended the event, every McDonald’s in the US is getting Google Edge Cloud blades installed in anticipation of a nationwide rollout. The anonymous user also shared a video showing how the Archy IQ system works.
In the video, three different ordering scenarios were shown, two in English and one in Spanish. In one scenario, Archy was even able to process an order when the customer only said “the usual.”
On TikTok, @jmvfamily.mcd also shared a video of Archy IQ, explaining that this would be the future of the technology. They claimed it would be able to recognize customers as they drive up, remember their order, and even know when it's their birthday.
@McFranchisee added: “Archy will not only assist drive-thru orders, but act as a master brain to help managers run a better restaurant. It’s like a personal assistant that alerts you to potential bottlenecks or issues.”

McDonald’s has not confirmed where else the system will be used, but if it proves successful in the US, there's a chance the technology could be rolled out to other countries around the world, such as the UK. However, we’ll have to wait and see how the trial goes in America first. It’s still unclear when Archy IQ will be rolled out to more than the five test stores.
McDonald’s UK has not commented yet.
What Do People Think of the New Drive-Thru System?
Many McDonald’s fans expressed their dissatisfaction with the return of AI at the chain. Denise Velarde said, “No one wants this – we like dealing with smiling faces.” @McFranchisee responded, “We still smile at the cash and present window – this is just at the speaker.”
Denise wasn’t alone in her feelings. A user known as @NyghtWyng wrote, “Just so your company, McDonald’s, and anyone reading this understand: We all hate the system installed at Wendy’s. We hate the kiosks at McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Taco Bell that we are asked to use instead of talking to a person. We will hate this too. Say goodbye to customers.”
@TexasSportsFann agreed, writing, “This sucks a**. The AI drive-thru at every restaurant I’ve been to sucks.” Similarly, @leftyslayer commented, “Today AI ordering, tomorrow robotic AI meal making. All of the workers will be out of work in no time.”
@LunaSpaceKitty added, “No wonder people are lonelier than ever now. Can’t even order a meal and talk to someone anymore.”

Hate it

Some users were concerned about the way Archy IQ welcomed customers back in the video. @kirbypway1001 posted, “My thing is, it said welcome back like it has facial recognition or something. That’s scary.”
However, not everyone was bothered by McDonald’s use of AI. Some said it was “interesting,” “fascinating,” and “exciting.” A user known as @DeepPur10997021 admitted, “Can’t wait until you get this up and working. Then you can roll it out everywhere. Jobs are changing, and this is one of the changes that need to happen.”
