Tragic Story of a Three-Year-Old Girl and the Aftermath
The heartbreaking story of a three-year-old girl who died due to a severe lice infestation has shocked many. Her parents, Samantha and Matthew Dylewski, faced legal consequences after pleading guilty to criminally negligent homicide.
Joycelynn Dylewski was found in a dire condition at her family's home in Corinth, New York. The parasitic insects caused her to become anemic, leading to her death on February 19, 2025. Her passing marked a tragic end to what should have been a normal childhood.
Legal Consequences for the Parents
Following the incident, Samantha and Matthew were sentenced to up to four years in prison. Their plea of guilty highlighted the severity of their negligence, which led to Joycelynn’s death. The court emphasized that their actions constituted criminal neglect, resulting in a fatal outcome for their daughter.
Just one day after Joycelynn's death, Samantha shared a GoFundMe page on her Facebook account, seeking donations for the funeral. This fundraiser was later taken down, and it remains unclear how much money was collected before its removal. The Daily Mail reached out to GoFundMe for more information but did not receive a response.
Emotional Responses from the Family
Samantha expressed her grief through social media posts, sharing messages filled with sorrow and desperation. She wrote, “My heart really can't take this mommy need her baby girl back!” alongside images of her late child, showing the deep emotional pain she felt.
In another post, she lamented, “Someone please wake me the f*** yo [sic] from this nightmare!!! PLEASE,” accompanied by sad-faced emojis. These posts reflected the profound impact of losing her daughter.
Medical Findings and Negligence
Medical examiners determined that Joycelynn's death was a result of acute and chronic neglect. The presence of lice led to anemia, which severely affected her heart and other organs. Additionally, clonidine, a blood pressure medication, was found in her system.
Samantha initially blamed her children for Joycelynn’s death, claiming that the little girl fought against the treatment applied to her scalp. She also suggested that her son left the clonidine pills out, leading to Joycelynn ingesting them. However, text messages between Samantha and Matthew revealed that they had discussed the drug, with Matthew suggesting that Samantha could give it to Joycelynn.
Squalid Living Conditions
Photos from Phoenix Property Maintenance, the cleaning company tasked with cleaning the home after Joycelynn’s death, revealed the extent of the neglect. The apartment was in a state of disrepair, with walls covered in grime, garbage scattered everywhere, and carpets stained and matted. Expired food items and wrappers were found in a bedroom, while garbage bags and crumbs surrounded a teal couch, along with children's toys.
Insects, including a dead cockroach, were found on Joycelynn's body. An investigator noted that her teeth were "rotten and black." The kitchen sink was clogged with muck, highlighting the unsanitary conditions in which the family lived.
Sentencing and Reflections
Matthew Dylewski received the same sentence as his wife, up to four years in prison. They were also issued a full restraining order from their four surviving children, preventing them from contacting or seeing them until 2038.
During her sentencing, Samantha addressed the court, expressing her failure as a mother. She stated, “As their mother, it's my duty to protect them from harm, and I failed. I also failed my other children.” She did not seek sympathy or forgiveness, emphasizing her longing for her baby girl.
Matthew, during his sentencing hearing, expressed his deep sorrow, stating, “I totally wish that it didn’t happen. I wish it would be that I died instead of my daughter.” His words reflected the immense pain and guilt he felt over the loss of his daughter.
