A Life-Changing Win for a Polish Train Conductor
A Polish train conductor who has spent two decades in Britain recently found himself in an unexpected position after winning a life-changing prize. Dawid Szulc, who currently resides in Crewe, Cheshire, was awarded a fully-furnished mansion in Lancashire, a Land Rover Defender, and £25,000 in tax-free cash. The 39-year-old, who moved to the UK in 2005 at just 18 years old, is now preparing to sell his new property and return to Poland.
Szulc won the prize on May 31 and has already sold the car, with plans to sell the house as well. His decision to move back to Poland comes after years of dreaming about being closer to family and friends. He said, "My biggest dream was going back home. I've always wanted to move back to Poland at some point and be closer to my friends and family, but there was always something in the way."
The challenges of mortgages, work, and daily responsibilities had kept him in Britain for so long. However, a single phone call changed everything. "There was always the mortgage, work and all the responsibilities that come with everyday life. Then all of a sudden, with one phone call, it all became possible."
A Surprising Moment
The moment of realization came while Szulc was at home watching television. He noticed missed calls and messages from Elite Competitions, which eventually led to his life-changing win. After watching the replay of the live draw, he described the experience as "a shock."
He added, "My life is going to be so much different. For the first time in such a long time, I feel very light. I feel like every single issue has suddenly disappeared. I feel such a relief, like a weight lifted off my shoulders."
This newfound freedom has already had a positive impact on his family. "Even around my family, I feel different, so much happier. I can see how it has changed me so much already. I feel so much better with my Mrs and my daughter. I am just not stressed anymore."
Sharing the News
The first people to learn about the win were his partner, Kamila, and their eight-year-old daughter, Amelia. The family stayed up until midnight celebrating together. His parents in Poland were next to find out, and his mother was overwhelmed with emotion. "My mum was probably more emotional than I was to be fair. She was crying," he said.
His parents had known for years about his desire to return home. "My parents have known for years that I always wanted to go back home at some point. Now I know it's going to happen. It's just a matter of time."
Planning the Future
The family is already looking forward to a two-week trip to Poznań in August, where Szulc plans to celebrate his 40th birthday surrounded by family and friends. He hopes this will be the start of a permanent move back to Poland within the next couple of years.
Reflecting on what the win means for his family, Szulc said, "The financial security that I can provide means we can focus on things that make us happy, enjoy life, enjoy our family and just be there for each other. Whatever passion Amelia develops, I will always support it and invest in it. That's what matters."
A Dream Come True
Elite Competitions CEO Alex Beckett shared the excitement about Szulc's win. "Everyone at Elite Competitions is delighted for Dawid and his family. When we spoke to him it quickly became clear this wasn't about cars or houses. This was about being closer to the people he loves."
Beckett added, "Dawid has spent years dreaming of returning home and now he has the opportunity to make that happen. We couldn't be happier for him and wish him every success with his plans for the future."
