Klopp's Possible Return to Liverpool Unveiled

Jürgen Klopp has made a return to the world of football management. The former Liverpool manager has been officially named as the new head coach of the Germany national team, marking his long-awaited return to the touchline after concluding his successful nine-year tenure at Anfield in 2022.

At 59 years old, Klopp has signed a four-year contract that will keep him with the German national team until 2030. His appointment comes following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, who stepped down after Germany's disappointing performance at the 2026 World Cup. The team was eliminated in the round-of-32 by Paraguay, continuing a trend of early exits from major tournaments.

Germany's recent international campaigns have not lived up to their previous standards. They were eliminated in the group stage of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, and their performances in the European Championships have also been underwhelming. As hosts of Euro 2024, they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Spain, while they also lost to England in the round-of-16 during the postponed Euro 2020 tournament.

This marks a stark contrast to Germany's success between 2002 and 2016, when they consistently reached at least the semi-finals in seven international tournaments. They won the World Cup in 2014, finished as runners-up in 2002, and secured third place in both 2006 and 2010. They also reached the final of Euro 2008 and were eliminated in the semi-finals of Euro 2012 and Euro 2016.

Klopp now faces the challenge of restoring Germany’s status among the elite nations in international football. His first major test will be the upcoming Euro 2028 tournament, which is set to be hosted jointly by England, Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland. The qualifying group stage draw is scheduled to take place in Belfast on 6 December 2026.

Germany has qualified for every edition of the European Championship since their first victory in 1972, making a failure to qualify for Euro 2028 a significant upset. This development could also lead to an intriguing scenario where Klopp returns to Liverpool, albeit in a different capacity.

Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium will serve as one of the nine host venues for Euro 2028, with five matches scheduled to be held there. The stadium will host several key fixtures, including a Group D match on Sunday 11 June, a Group A match on Wednesday 14 June, a Group E clash on Saturday 17 June, and a Group C final on Tuesday 20 June. The second-placed teams from Groups A and B will then meet at the stadium in the round-of-16 on Saturday 24 June.

If Wales, Northern Ireland, or the Republic of Ireland advance to the tournament, they have already been assigned group head positions in Groups A, D, and E respectively. None of their matches are scheduled to be held in Liverpool, increasing the likelihood that Germany could be placed in one of these groups. This would provide Klopp with the opportunity to return to the city where he spent nearly a decade as Liverpool’s manager.

Although Klopp has never managed at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, having left Liverpool before Everton moved to their new ground, it would be fascinating to see how the fans of his former club respond to his presence.

Additionally, Klopp’s appointment means he will not be available to participate in future editions of Liverpool’s Legends fixtures. He previously served as an assistant to Sir Kenny Dalglish during a 2026 charity match against Borussia Dortmund. However, with such events typically held during the March international window, he will be unavailable for future matches due to his commitments with the German national team.

Klopp was officially introduced as Germany’s new head coach on Friday 24 July. During a passionate press conference, he emphasized that this role would be his final managerial position. "Jurgen Klopp is not going to have any 'career' after the national team," he stated. "This is the pinnacle of my footballing career as a coach. I will give everything I've got."
