TikTok Shop Surges, But Brands Struggle to Profit

The Growth of TikTok Shop: A Closer Look
TikTok Shop has seen impressive growth, with $980 million in U.S. beauty sales in the second quarter of 2026, representing an 82% year-over-year increase. According to e-commerce data firm Charm.io, this growth is part of a broader trend where eMarketer projects $23.41 billion in U.S. sales for 2026, marking a 48% increase. This figure is enough to make TikTok Shop a bigger U.S. e-commerce business than Target, Costco, or Best Buy individually.
However, while the dollar figures are rising, the growth rate itself is slowing down. In 2024, the platform grew by 407%, then 108% in 2025, and is expected to grow by 48% in 2026. This slowdown doesn't necessarily indicate a problem, but it does suggest that the platform is maturing and becoming more competitive.
The Hidden Reality Behind the Numbers
Despite the headline numbers, not all sellers on TikTok Shop are experiencing success. According to a Momentum Works report produced with Tabcut, there are roughly 803,500 registered stores in the U.S., but more than half of them recorded zero sales in 2025. Only 2,143 stores surpassed $1 million in gross merchandise volume (GMV), which means that less than a quarter of one percent of the total stores are generating meaningful revenue.
The same report found similar patterns among the platform’s active affiliates. About 291 affiliates topped $1 million in sales, while most generated under $10,000 for the year. These numbers highlight that while the platform is growing, only a small percentage of sellers are reaping the benefits.
The Cost of Scaling on TikTok Shop
Scaling on TikTok Shop isn't free. The platform's model relies heavily on creators, with brands needing to maintain a constant supply of free product for creators, generate new content regularly, and manage an affiliate roster. This process involves ongoing costs, including platform referral fees, creator commissions, and mandatory fulfillment costs.
Beauty brands often set higher commission rates to incentivize creators to promote their products. Adding a launch-period discount to seed reviews and velocity can lead to breakeven or even losses in the early stages, despite the GMV appearing to be a win on the dashboard.
Who Is Leading the Way?
Looking specifically at Q2's beauty numbers, Medicube, a Korean skincare brand, led the category with $62.8 million in GMV. Dr. Melaxin followed closely with $38.8 million. Both brands have established marketing budgets that support their presence on TikTok Shop. Fifth place went to ColorWow, which jumped from ninth place the previous quarter. ColorWow was acquired by L’Oreal last year, and this backing plays a significant role in its rapid ascent.
These patterns aren't coincidental. Brands that scale on TikTok Shop often arrive with existing resources, whether through established marketing budgets or parent company support. This reality should be considered before viewing the platform as an equalizer for all brands.
The Fragile Position of Channel-Dependent Growth
Building a brand's growth around one channel's willingness to distribute it is a fragile position. Swapping a Meta problem for a TikTok Shop problem is just relocation. Before committing to a TikTok Shop push for the back half of the year, it's essential to analyze the numbers carefully.
Start with the deceleration: a channel whose growth rate has dropped from 407% to 48% over three years isn't opening up for new entrants. It's normalizing, and normalizing channels tend to reward those with scale and budget, not newcomers.
The Math Before Q4
Price out your own version of the cost stack: your category's referral fee, the creator commission needed to get picked up, mandatory fulfillment, and a launch discount, all before product cost. If that math doesn't clear breakeven for several months, decide now whether you can fund that runway on purpose, rather than discovering it by accident on your P&L.
TikTok Shop isn't going anywhere, and for the right brand, it's one of the more interesting channels in retail right now. However, growth at the platform level and profit at the brand level are two different numbers, and only one of them is yours to keep. Chasing the first without checking the second is hope with a growth chart attached.
