Rafael Camara Reveals Intense Haas Testing Amid Four-Driver Shortlist

A Dream Realised: Rafael Camara Secures Haas Seat for 2027 Formula 1 Season

The journey from karting circuits to the pinnacle of motorsport has always been a dream for many aspiring drivers — but few have managed to turn that vision into reality quite as swiftly and decisively as Rafael Camara. The Brazilian sensation, currently leading the Formula 2 championship, has officially clinched a seat with Haas F1 Team for the 2027 Formula 1 season, marking a historic moment not just for him, but for his family and the wider motorsport community in Brazil.

Camara’s rise has been meteoric. Having already made waves in Formula 3 by becoming one of the few drivers to win both the Formula 3 and Formula 2 titles in their respective rookie seasons — a feat previously achieved only by compatriot Gabriel Bortoleto — he now stands on the threshold of Formula 1. His selection was no mere formality; it came after an intense two-day evaluation test at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in Portimão, where multiple high-potential drivers were assessed under pressure.

Among those considered were Ryo Hirakawa and Jack Doohan, both part of Haas’ reserve driver programme, as well as Leonardo Fornaroli, a rising star within McLaren’s junior development system. Yet, it was Camara who stood out — not just for raw speed, but for consistency, adaptability, and maturity under pressure.

The Test That Changed Everything

Describing the experience as “very intense,” Camara reflected on the challenges of stepping into a new team, a brand-new car, and an unfamiliar track — all within a compressed timeframe. “You knew that it was going to be important, the test, and you need to deliver in a way,” he said in a post-announcement interview. “You need to perform these two days with a new track, new car, and a new team. So just trying to get as quickly as possible to learn everything and put it in place.”

Despite being thrust into a high-stakes environment with little prior exposure to Haas’ operations, Camara demonstrated remarkable composure. His ability to grasp technical nuances, provide constructive feedback, and maintain strong lap times throughout the session impressed team principal Ayao Komatsu. “He showed more than just raw pace,” Komatsu noted. “There was intelligence behind the wheel, emotional control, and a clear understanding of what it takes to be competitive at this level.”

For Camara, the mental resilience required during those two days was just as crucial as physical performance. “Just a huge amount of pressure,” he admitted. “But I was really trying to focus in, enjoy it, and make the most of the moment. I think I was happy with the job I did in the end. I was happy with myself.”

A Surprise Call, A Life-Changing Moment

When the news broke that he had secured the seat, Camara admitted he was stunned. “I got a call off Ayao in Milan, and then the first thing I said to him [was], ‘Are you sure?’” he laughed. “Obviously, I was very happy with that. Just super excited.”

The moment was especially poignant given the sacrifices made by his family. Coming from a non-motorsport background, Camara’s path to Formula 1 was paved through determination, support, and unwavering belief from his parents. “I’m extremely happy, especially for my parents,” he said. “There’s a lot of sacrifice on their side and making something that was a passion of a kid, and we are also not even from the motorsports world. We didn’t really know exactly what was the way to go to be here, so very proud of being here today.”

Racing Number 50: A Symbol of New Beginnings

Camara confirmed he will carry the number 50 on his car when he debuts in Formula 1 next year. His preferred choice, number 5, was unavailable due to its selection by fellow Brazilian and Audi works driver Gabriel Bortoleto. While initially disappointed, Camara embraced the new number as a symbol of his own unique journey — one defined by perseverance, growth, and ambition.

With Esteban Ocon departing the team at the end of the 2026 season, Ollie Bearman is expected to retain the second seat for another year, ensuring continuity while Camara prepares for his long-awaited debut.

As the countdown to 2027 begins, fans around the world are watching closely. Camara’s story is not just about talent — it’s about timing, opportunity, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. With his calm demeanor, technical insight, and proven ability to thrive under pressure, he could well become one of the defining figures in the next era of Formula 1.
