This action appears reminiscent of what happened in 2017 as ZANU PF’s youth wing has shown support for President Emmerson Mnangagwa amidst the current power struggle with his vice president, Constantino Chiwenga.
At the inauguration of Mnangagwa's Youth Fund in Harare on Thursday, Deputy Secretary for Youth Affairs John Paradza stated that the party’s young members would use all means necessary to prevent protests organized by dissatisfied war veterans.
In 2017, young individuals like Kudzai Chipanga and Anastancia Ndhlovu found themselves compelled to issue public apologies to the country after they openly supported late President Robert Mugabe in internal conflicts which he ultimately lost.
Daring displays, like those seen during the launch where crowds of young people were shouting 2030 ndeya ED In response to demands urging him to remain until 2030, despite constitutional restrictions, this led to public apologies, including one that was aired live on ZBC by the military.
Led by Blessed Geza, war veterans have designated March 31 for their demonstration against Mnangagwa's corrupt associates and the worsening economic situation. They are urging Zimbabwean citizens to participate.
Geza, who remains off the radar publicly, has been heavily criticizing Mnangagwa along with his associates like Wicknell Chivayo, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, and Martin Rushwaya. At the same time, he supports Chiwenga as the appropriate leader to address Zimbabwe’s ongoing issues.
"Social media reports suggest that there might be protests. Let me reassure you that as long as I continue to oversee Machakaire in this sector, no such gatherings will take place," stated Paradza amidst loud cheers from the young people present at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on Thursday.
We don't let social media comments keep us awake at night; our aim is for you to feel serene.
It is our responsibility as members of the youth league to protect the President and the party.
Geza, who has called for Mnangagwa’s prompt removal from office, was labeled delusional by Information Minister Jenfan Muswere on Thursday. Following his initial public statements, Zanu PF swiftly expelled Geza from the party ranks.
"Musiwenze has advised Zimbabweans to disregard Geza’s delusional outbursts, stating that such polemical and reactive posturing merely serves as a distraction from genuine aspirations," he stated.
Internal conflicts within Zanu PF have led to former comrades Mnangagwa and Chiwenga being set at odds with one another as the party nears its electoral congress in 2027.
It seems Chiwenga, who was thought by many to be poised to succeed Mnangagwa, has now apparently been sidelined despite his crucial part in facilitating Mnangagwa’s rise through the 2017 coup.
The internal conflicts within ZANU PF are no longer confined to the hallways of their main offices. Even Party spokesman Christopher Mutsvangwa was overheard criticizing Chiwenga.
Chiwenga was portrayed by Mutsvangwa as ineligible for election, harsh, and lacking education.
