Ottawa [Canada], March 21 (ANI): The Canadian Hindu Advocacy (CoHNA) and B’nai Brith Canada, the nation’s oldest human rights group, have joined forces to tackle the increasing appearance of Nazi symbols of hatred.
This effort seeks to enhance awareness and comprehension, concurrently pushing for precise vocabulary to distinguish the revered Swastika from the detestable Hakenkreuz.
When sharing a post on X, CoHNA Canada stated, "In an effort targeting actions against the escalating use of hateful Nazi symbols, while being considerate towards everyone affected! We particularly commend @bnaibrithcanada for employing the ACCURATE term—Hakenkreuz—to refer to the Nazi emblem instead of the commonly used yet INCORRECT term 'swastika.'"
As per Richard Robertson, who serves as the Director of Research and Advocacy at B'nai Brith Canada, the swastika has unfortunately become incorrectly linked to the Nazi regime. “This emblem, which holds deep significance for various religions—the swastika—has unjustly been tied to the Nazis. It’s crucial that we do not perpetuate the confusion between this ancient symbol of harmony and one representing hatred,” stated Robertson.
Robertson highlighted that the distortion of the Swastika's symbolism constitutes a historical wrongdoing. He stated, "It is a historical injustice that the true meaning of the Swastika has been unfairly tarnished due to its association with the Nazis."
"Through our petition, B'nai Brith Canada seeks not just to safeguard vulnerable groups from hatred but also to assist the public in distinguishing the revered swastika from the despicable Nazi symbolism," he stated.
The post indicates that CoHNA is delighted with this distinction, as it confirms the efforts and messages conveyed through their Swastika Education and Awareness Campaign launched in 2020. The campaign aimed to clearly differentiate the sacred swastika from Hitler’s malevolent Hakenkreuz symbol. This exemplifies effective advocacy.
Moreover, the post stated that they anticipate 'continuing to expand our collaboration' with B'nai Brith, noting that together they tackle rising hatred and foster comprehension and mutual respect via precise vocabulary and proactive measures.
Organizations representing Buddhist, Hindu and Jain Canadians have endorsed B'nai Brith Canada's recent call for the Federal Government to ban the public display of Nazi symbols, including the Nazi hooked cross (Hakenkreuz).
"We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Canada to pass legislation banning, with exceptions for certain educational and artistic purposes, the public display of Nazi symbols and iconography, including the Nazi hooked cross (Hakenkreuz)," the petition said.
"Banning all Nazi symbols and imagery," it stated. (ANI)
