On March 21, GNA reported from Tema that residents of Tema Community One Site Three strongly objected to the recent destruction carried out by the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) Ghana Limited, which demolished houses, buildings, and garages.
On Friday, the impacted inhabitants, spearheaded by Mr. Godsway Dzene, who serves as the Assemblyman for the Ashiboi Electoral Area, proceeded to the TDC to voice their discontent.
Mr. Dzene voiced serious reservations to the authorities regarding the manner in which the firm’s team carried out the demolition process.
He said that the task force was destroying buildings at random and labeling properties with "Demolish immediately by TDC" without giving previous warnings or interacting with the inhabitants.
He informed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the abruptness of the demolitions left the residents stunned, as numerous individuals had dedicated their assets toward improving their properties. They expressed distress over the absence of communication and openness throughout this procedure.
"We believed it involved just structures and containers, but to our surprise, the boy’s quarters constructed by TDC, which individuals own, were also included. They're asking for their removal, but to where? Moreover, there wasn’t any interaction with the residents," he pointed out.
He mentioned that even though the task force began demolition efforts two weeks prior in different areas, they arrived at site three just three days ago, suggesting that during this period, they had torn down several buildings located between OLAMS and the fifth intersection.
He stressed that those impacted should have had the opportunity to converse with the appropriate authorities prior to taking any steps, raising doubts about why the firm decided to move forward without initially involving the community to consider different options or offer sufficient warning.
The upset locals requested the TDC representative to halt the task force from entering their region.
However, officials from TDC Ghana Limited told them that the newly appointed managing director had not yet been thoroughly updated on the situation and would consequently require some time to examine the case.
Nevertheless, this enraged the locals whose demeanor had turned confrontational, leading the authorities to permit them to meet the Managing Director, Mr. Courage Nunekpeku. He reassured them that they would be scheduled for a meeting with him before the end of the day.
