Energy Transition Demands New Grid Strategies: An International Perspective

Action-focused, far-reaching grid development strategies are essential for meeting upcoming demand requirements.

Grid operators were instructed to undergo comprehensive changes, necessitating a reassessment of traditional methods and the implementation of fresh approaches to address the requirements of the energy transition.

Based on an analysis conducted by Kearney, optimizing asset management is one approach. Utility companies ought to redirect their attention from merely enhancing grid uptime and reducing operational expenses to improving the entire grid’s efficiency.

Kearney highlighted two crucial elements: the creation of an actionable and forward-looking building plan derived from the target grid design, ensuring alignment with upcoming demand requirements; along with the accurate assessment of resources necessary for every construction activity.

Insufficient transparency and planning reliability in asset management lead to inefficiencies in subsequent stages of the value chain, which can only be enhanced independently," the report stated. "A highly integrated and efficient production process, similar to those seen in manufacturing, necessitates thorough and clear planning within asset management.

An alternative approach involves establishing a centralized body responsible for orchestrating and directing construction initiatives. Such an entity streamlines interactions with vendors and contractors while ensuring clear distribution of assets.

By centralizing aspects of construction management, communication becomes more streamlined, and transparency regarding resource utilization is enhanced.

Finally, Kearney mentioned that grid operators must develop a comprehensive and dedicated procurement strategy to guarantee resource availability in the long run.

"This requires openness about the long-term needs for resources and the capabilities within the current portfolio of suppliers and service providers," it stated.

"Quantities of components, kilometers of distribution lines, and other crucial metrics should be documented on a regional and annual basis and then contrasted with the existing capacities. Doing so enables the identification of capacity shortages and helps refine procurement strategies," the document stated.
