FG Expresses Interest in Benue's Livestock Development Project—Minister

The Minister for Livestock Development, Idi Maiha, has stated that the Federal Government is keen on advancing the Benue Livestock Development Project.

Maiha revealed this information on Friday at the Benue Livestock Summit 2025 held in Makurdi. He mentioned that the state offers significant potential within the livestock industry.

The minister indicated that a path for the sustainable economic growth of the state had been established and encouraged the state government to utilize this by revitalizing the livestock industry.

He pointed out that the establishment of the livestock ministry was a clarion call to national transformation, adding that several countries have indicated interest in partnering with Nigeria in the sector.

We plan to revitalize the grazing reserves and transform them into fully equipped ranches. We have requested that all local authorities allocate land for these ranches.

I informed the governor that we are prepared to allocate 1000 hectares of land, with the understanding that the Qatari government will cover the cost.

“The Brazilian government is equally keen on selecting the land, and Benue stands to gain from this. Amidst all these developments, we require peace and dialogue to accomplish much,” he stated.

In his welcoming speech earlier, Dr. Aondoakaa Asambe from the Benue Bureau for Livestock Development, Transborder and Animal Control emphasized the necessity of revamping and reshaping the livestock industry.

Asambe stated that the sector was grappling with issues such as financial challenges, inefficient production processes, conflicts between farmers and herders, and climate change impacts.

For residents of Benue, known as the 'Nation’s FoodBasket,' this summit carries particular importance as it marks the first ever livestock summit in the rich history of our beloved state.

It highlights our steadfast dedication to utilizing the significant potential of the livestock industry and turning it into a major catalyst for economic development, employment generation, and food security.

"The theme of this summit, 'Rethinking Livestock Production in Nigeria: A Pathway to Economic Growth and Autonomy,' underscores the critical need to reassess our tactics, regulations, and methods in response to evolving worldwide issues," he stated.

The DG mentioned that he has already conducted visits to facilities at various livestock sites throughout the state, noting that numerous ones were either non-functional or neglected.

He praised the governor for considering him worthy of the appointment out of millions in the state and assured that he would fulfill his assigned responsibilities.

Asambe also expressed appreciation for the support provided by the Minister of Livestock Development up until now.
