Flood-Damaged Bridge Sparks Fear in Rehoboth Community

People from the Rehoboth area who travel to Windhoek for work mentioned that some managed to sleep soundly at home on Thursday night, whereas others were unable to do so.

This occurred following damage to a bridge on the route connecting Windhoek and Rehoboth due to flooding from a river on Thursday.

"Yesterday was truly memorable. Despite this, I along with some others succeeded in crossing the bridge, found a ride, and made it home safely," Leroy Jansen stated.

“I arrived home late, exhausted and stressed, yet I feel grateful for making it back safely since numerous individuals weren’t as fortunate. Some had to spend the night on the bridge,” Jansen stated.

Jansen mentioned that navigating through water, sand, and rocks proved challenging for him.

“I had to take off my shoes because my feet were injured. My clothing became filthy, and my whole body felt achy. The journey wasn’t simple for us, yet our primary objective was to reach home and reunite with our loved ones. At home, I have a spouse and kids eagerly awaiting my return,” Jansen stated.

Jansen mentioned that despite being at his place, he didn't get much rest on Thursday night as he was concerned for those who weren’t able to be at their homes.

Bernice Beukes mentioned that the partial collapse of the bridge occurred approximately 30 kilometers away from Windhoek at a rapid pace, with numerous individuals failing to ensure proper safety measures were in place for their children.

Beukes mentioned that both she and her sister were forced to spend the night at the bridge along with others who couldn’t make it back home.

"I needed to ask my family to take care of my children since they are accustomed to being with me every evening. As a single parent whose spouse has sadly passed away, last night was the first time my boys slept without me. However, I feel relieved knowing they were safe," explained Beukes.

Beukes showed frustration over the government's silence on the issue.

The collapse of the bridge wasn’t our doing, yet we suffered its consequences. It’s disheartening that the government didn’t offer us any assistance. Instead, they seem indifferent to our plight and continue with their scheduled festivities, such as celebrating Namibia’s 35th Independence Day and inaugurating President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah for her fifth term. This makes me feel unimportant to my own government at this time. We truly deserve more consideration from them,” stated Beukes.

Beukes expressed gratitude towards the Roads Authority (RA) for their diligent efforts and commitment to resolving the issue. He noted, “Even with the difficult rainy weather, work on the bypass continues. The crew stayed focused on accelerating the project’s progress. Their resolve has inspired me to stay composed amid the numerous obstacles I’m facing,” Beukes stated.
