The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, is encountering increasing criticism regarding the appointment of Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Frank Abrokwah to the position of Deputy Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Concerns have been raised about DCOP Abrokwah’s track record, with critics pointing to his tenure as Ashanti Regional Police Commander, during which he was accused of failing to maintain order in several instances.
The latest dispute involving him allegedly resulted in his relocation to the Police Headquarters in Accra. This situation stemmed from the disorder during the Council of State elections in the area.
The general populace and security experts alike have raised doubts about whether DCOP Abrokwah is suitable for such a crucial position within the CID.
They contend that his apparent ineffectiveness as a regional commander casts doubt on his capability to efficiently manage the investigation division within the Ghana Police Service.
Although recognizing the IGP’s jurisdiction over appointments, critics caution that any shortcomings within the CID under DCOP Abrokwah’s supervision might eventually tarnish the reputation of the IGP, particularly since he appointed DCOP/Ms. Lydia Yaako Donkor as the Director-General of CID.
As part of recent developments, COP Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah was transferred to the Ministry of the Interior where she will serve as a Technical Advisor to the Minister shortly after her appointment as the Director-General for Research & Planning within the Ghana Police Service.
The unexpected transfer was verified through a communication from the Presidency, which bore the signature of Callistus Mahama, who serves as the Secretary to the President.
The correspondence read: "Pursuant to this instruction, you are being transferred from your present assignment to the Ministry of the Interior, assuming the role of Technical Advisor to the Honorable Minister. This change becomes effective right away, and you must coordinate with the appropriate officials to facilitate a seamless move to your new capacity."
The presidency also commended COP Addo-Danquah’s efforts for the country and conveyed assurance that their skills and dedication would prove invaluable in their new role.
Her transfer is part of an extensive reshuffle within the Ghana Police Service, initiated by IGP Yohuno, aimed at enhancing leadership and improving operational effectiveness.
COP Addo-Danquah formerly worked as the Executive Director of EOCO, leading initiatives against corruption. Additionally, she was appointed as the Director-General of CID, managing significant criminal inquiries.
In her new position at the Interior Ministry, she will likely offer strategic guidance on security measures and improvements in law enforcement.
The reassignment of high-ranking police officers has sparked a discussion about the IGP’s choices as a leader.
Spectators are carefully watching the impact these modifications will have on the overall efficacy of the Ghana Police Service.
Less than a week after taking office, the IGP replaced multiple Regional Commanders and Police Board members as part of significant restructuring efforts, which followed the substitution of Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. This included the following assignments:
