ABUJA The Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, acting on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, has signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with representatives from Canada.
At the signing ceremony held at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, Keyamo clarified that the pact signed was not a comprehensive bilateral agreement but rather a codeshare arrangement. This type of agreement involves multiple airlines promoting and selling tickets for flights run by one of them, enabling travelers to journey using a distinct carrier's identification number.
He mentioned that Nigeria will appoint airline companies to bolster this agreement.
The Minister expressed gratitude to Canadian officials, noting that his counterpart in Canada has endorsed portions of the bilateral agreement. However, to reduce expenses, he will be finalizing the agreement in Nigeria instead.
He stated that the accord will significantly enhance the bond between Canada and Nigeria.
The permanent secretary at the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, expressed gratitude to the minister of aviation for his proactive approach and unwavering commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s aviation sector.
While greeting the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Kana mentioned that Nigeria boasts the strongest economic relationship in Africa with Canada. They also highlighted that the Bilateral Air Services Agreement would prove advantageous for both nations.
The Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian government in his reply.
He mentioned that it is a privilege for him to attend the signing of the BASA and highlighted that the Canadian government is ready to consistently collaborate with Nigeria in order to strengthen bilateral accords.
Code-sharing enables broader accessibility to various destinations within an airline's route network without necessitating additional flight routes. It simplifies travel arrangements by permitting unified reservations for journeys involving several flights and different carriers. Today, most prominent airlines collaborate via code-sharing agreements with other operators, making such partnerships integral components of global airline coalitions.
