On Friday, the Nigerian federal government and the Canadian government entered into a Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), which permits travelers to fly using another carrier's flight code.
When signing the accord in Abuja on behalf of the Federal Government, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, stated that this advancement marks a crucial step forward for the aviation sector.
He clarified that the pact wasn’t a comprehensive bilateral deal; instead, it was a codeshare agreement. This type of arrangement involves multiple airlines marketing and selling seats on flights run by one of them, enabling travelers to fly using another carrier’s identification code.
Keyamo additionally mentioned that Nigeria will appoint airline operators to bolster this arrangement.
The Minister stated that this agreement will significantly enhance the bond between Canada and Nigeria.
He thus praised the Canadian authorities for endorsing the accord in Nigeria, noting that it will reduce expenses.

He stated that the Canadian government is prepared to continually collaborate with Nigeria in enhancing bilateral accords.
At the gathering, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, greeted the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria and mentioned that Nigeria boasts the strongest economic collaboration in Africa with Canada.
He said that the bilateral air services agreement will prove advantageous to both nations.
As stated by Odutayo Oluseymi, the Head of Press and Public Affairs at the Ministry, code-sharing provides increased accessibility to various destinations within an airline’s route map without necessitating additional flight operations. It also simplifies travel arrangements by enabling unified reservations for journeys involving several flights and different carriers.
“The majority of leading airlines nowadays engage in code-sharing agreements with other carriers, which is an essential aspect of airline alliances,” the declaration stated.
