Sachin's First Century: The Innings That Built His Confidence

Kolkata (West Bengal), India, March 21 (ANI): Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar shared his favorite hundreds from international matches and highlighted his initial one among those 100 centuries. He achieved this milestone against England back in 1990 and described it as an innings that instilled self-confidence in him.

During the sixth season of Backstage with Boria, Sachin spoke to Boria Majumdar.

"It’s quite challenging to pick just one!(Which of his international hundreds stands out the most?). However, I believe my maiden hundred in international cricket against England back in 1990 was particularly significant. At only 17 years old, our team was facing difficult circumstances. Scoring that century boosted my confidence and affirmed that I could compete at the top tier," Sachin mentioned.

In the Second Test held in Manchester during 1990, a prodigious 17-year-old Sachin scored an impressive unbeaten 119 off 189 deliveries, including 17 boundaries, as India faced a target of 408 runs. Despite the game ending in a draw, Tendulkar received the ‘Player of the Match’ honor for his performances of 68 and 119*. Throughout this particular series that England secured victory in with a scoreline of 1-0, Sachin accumulated 245 runs across three games and five innings, maintaining an outstanding average of 61.25. This included one century and two half-centuries.

This milestone would act as a cornerstone for his remarkable Test performance in England, where he amassed 1,575 runs in 17 Tests at an average of 54.31, including four hundreds and eight half-centuries across 30 innings.

A another notable knock for Sachin was his double century scored against South Africa in 2010 during an ODI, making him the first male cricketer to achieve this feat in the fifty-over format.

"Another standout moment was scoring my double century in One Day Internationals against South Africa in 2010—being the first to achieve that feat was particularly special," stated Sachin.

In the second One Day International held in Gwalior as part of a three-match series, Sachin amassed an unbeaten 200 runs off 147 deliveries, including 25 boundaries and three sixes. Supported by strong performances from Dinesh Karthik, who scored 79 runs in 85 balls featuring four boundaries and three sixes, along with captain MS Dhoni’s blistering knock of 68 not out in just 35 balls, comprising seven boundaries and four sixes, India set a challenging target of 401/3. Chasing this formidable score, South Africa was bowled out for 248, securing victory for India in the series. (ANI)
