A Tragic Loss and a Silent Mother
In a heart-wrenching incident that has left a community in shock, a mother from Massachusetts allegedly took the lives of her two young children before being arrested. The tragic event unfolded in their affluent home in Wellesley, a Boston suburb, where Kai and Ella MacAusland, aged seven and six respectively, were found dead on April 24.
According to police reports, Janette MacAusland, 49, an acupuncturist, strangled her children at their $1.5 million home. She then drove to her aunt's residence in Bennington, Vermont, where she was apprehended and confessed to taking her children’s lives. Her chilling statement to authorities was, “I wanted the three of us to go to God together.”
Janette is currently in custody at the Western Mass Regional Women’s Correctional Center in Massachusetts. She has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder and is scheduled to appear in court in July.
The tragedy has deeply affected the family and friends of the children. On Saturday afternoon, distraught family and friends gathered inside St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Wellesley to say their final goodbyes to the beloved siblings. Despite the immense grief, the funeral service did not mention Janette, who was absent as she remained in custody.

During the service, several people, including neighbors, family friends, and their father, Sam MacAusland, 62, shared bittersweet memories of Ella and Kai. One close friend described Sam's love for his children as "unbelievable." Sam took the opportunity to share stories about his children, highlighting their favorite activities such as dancing, swimming, drawing rainbows and hearts, and more.
Sam also shared a song written by his daughter, titled "Rainbow Colors." He recited the lyrics, which included lines like, “Rainbow shine down on my family. Rainbow shine down on my family... Rainbow colors shine down on my family.”
Another neighbor, who lived across the street from the MacAuslands, spoke about the impact of the loss. She mentioned that the street had become too quiet and that their lives felt duller without the presence of Ella and Kai. “We miss you, and you will live on in our hearts,” she said.

The hour-long service concluded with a private burial, as detailed in the obituary of Kai and Ella. Both children were students at Schofield Elementary School, with Kai in second grade and Ella in kindergarten.
After her arrest, Janette was seen with a visible bloody neck injury in her mugshot. In a chilling confession, she told an officer, “I strangled them and then I tried to kill myself.” She added, “I wanted the three of us to go to God together, but it didn't work.”
Authorities in Vermont immediately notified their counterparts in Massachusetts, leading to a welfare check on the couple's home. There, they discovered the deceased children. At the time, Sam was in New Hampshire and was alerted by a neighbor that police were at his home. According to dispatch records, he called 911 in desperation, with a dispatcher describing him as "uncontrollable."

The dispatch logs revealed the moment police found the children's bodies. An officer reported arriving to find no cars in the driveway and a "rear door unsecured." Upon entering the home, he discovered evidence of a gruesome crime, noting "blood splatter." As more units arrived around 10pm that night, officers found the bodies of Kai and Ella, both strangled to death.
The community continues to mourn the loss of two innocent lives, while the case remains under investigation. Janette's actions have left a profound impact on everyone involved, and the tragedy serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of mental health support.
