Columbia Bar Issues Statement After Man Charged in Fatal Shooting

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A man was taken into custody by the Columbia Police Department regarding a deadly shooting that took place at a bar during the early hours of Sunday.

Columbia Police reported the arrest of 33-year-old Marvin Edmond on Sunday afternoon, just under a day following the event.

As per CPD, the incident occurred at Ole Place on Two Notch Road following a confrontation that took place inside the bar.

Police verified that during the altercation, Edmond started firing, wounding three individuals.

Law enforcement officials report that two women sustained severe injuries and a man was also shot, although his wounds are not considered life-threatening.

As stated by Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford, one of the deceased individuals, 24-year-old Taniya Hall, succumbed to her injuries.

Rob's Ole Place Pub issued the following statement regarding the shooting:

We would like to provide complete transparency regarding the tragic events that occurred last night. First and foremost, we ask that you keep Rob's family in your thoughts and prayers, as his niece, Niya, has passed away and his son, Tyke, was also shot twice. We want to make it clear that the shooting did not take place inside Ole Place. There was a conflict between two groups, and all individuals involved were asked to leave the premises. After a short time, Rob’s son, Tyke, who is part of the security team, was helping his niece, Niya, and her friends to her car. When they went outside, one of the people who had been asked to leave approached them and began attacking Niya. Tyke pulled the person off Niya and wrestled him to the ground. Once on the ground, the suspect pulled out a gun from his waistband or pocket and started shooting. Niya was shot while trying to get to her car, and Tyke was shot twice while on the ground with the suspect. We have been informed there was a third person who was shot, but we do not know who this individual is, although we hope she will recover fully. Tyke's injuries were not life-threatening, although one of the bullets came very close to his femoral artery. He has since been released from the hospital. Tyke acted bravely to protect his cousin and other customers from this senseless act. Please continue to pray for him, as his wounds go beyond the physical. Rob's Ole Place Pub is a private, member-only club. Members are allowed to bring a guest. The suspect was not a member. Rob has a full security team, and every person is scanned with a metal detecting wand before entering. We are confident the suspect did not have the gun inside the bar. There are multiple security guards at the entrance, throughout the club, and walking around the parking lot monitoring outside activity. If an altercation occurs inside, all involved parties are removed immediately. There are also security cameras throughout the bar that are continuously monitored. Unfortunately, even with a well-staffed security team, we cannot legally search vehicles for weapons. Before this incident, there had not been any major security issues at Rob's, and the safety of our customers has always been a top priority. We are currently reviewing our policies and security plans and are committed to doing everything possible to ensure our customers have a safe place to socialize. Right now, we ask everyone to respect the family and avoid spreading rumors. The facts are provided here in full. The victims of this crime are members of Rob's own family. If you know him personally, you know he would do anything to care for his family. The loss and injury of two of his loved ones is difficult enough without having to read negative comments online. We ask you to keep Rob, his family, and the staff of Ole Place in your prayers. Additionally, we challenge everyone to rediscover love for one another. End this senseless violence! Rest in Peace, Taniya.

The inquiry is still in progress, the CPD states.

This is an ongoing situation. Keep an eye out for further information.
